Another Great Book in the Steck Series from James Ward By Ron Bourque Jim Ward has done it again! “The Damascus Factor,” the sixth book in his Bob Steck Adventures of a Spymaster Series, continues the exciting stories of the previous books. Unfortunately, Steck comes out of retirement for this adventure and talks about retiring again at the end, so this could be the last in the series.Even so, these novels are all based on real history, and “The Damascus Factor” even includes ISIS, the Ebola outbreak and other very recent events. This book deals with what is happening today. Ward’s knowledge of the latest military toys (e.g., Predator Drone with Hellfire missiles to get rid of a troublesome satellite ground station, etc.). You’ll also learn an awful lot about modern communications and how it works. If you like to travel, Ward is great at describing local scenes, foods and customs. He creates a picture that makes you feel like you’re already there. And of course, he continually jumps from our Christian culture to Muslim cultures back and forth. The book never gets boring. If you’ve never read any of the series, you just might want to start with the first book, “Eagle in The Storm,” and enjoy the ride in the succeeding books. It’s a six volume series that’s enjoyable, educational and well worth reading.

Yeah, a little violent, but no sex or foul language. BC Crow is a new author, but a good one. This series is probably best read in order though. I can't wait for book 3 to come out. In book 1, Flint was the main character. This book follows his estranged wife. The whole series puts a new twist on the giants of old.

The Sand Bluff Murders (Jonas McCleary Series Book 1), by C.M. Albrecht

Review Café Reads Where books and beans are celebrated TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2012 Special Blend: The Sand Bluff Murders Rating: 8/10 in Mystery/Thriller Cambridge Books, 2012  More information: writewordsinc.com/ With a touch of humor and romance, The Sand Bluff Murders throws a likeable lead into a chaotic and intriguing mystery plot. As the mystery unravels, the first-person narration forges an important bond between reader and lead character, whose wit and sarcasm endear him to the reader. The writing is polished and practical. What really grabbed me was the dialogue, which captures the essence of a conversation without insulting the readers' intelligence. Albrecht shows his skill and precision as an author when he summarizes the protagonist's back story later in the book, rather than pummeling the reader upfront with a lengthy biography. I was also impressed with Albrecht's pacing and chapter breaks. Albrecht clearly understands the mystery genre and has assembled his suspects, alibis and intrigues accordingly. Overall, I highly recommend this book.  The Sand Bluff Murders--with its witty narration, charming protagonist and solid mystery plot--is definitely worth the read.

From the Inside Flap Sand Bluff, California, a very small town long ago bypassed by the freeway. A quiet little place where, according to one resident, "Most excitement this town ever seen was that time back in sixty-two whenever that Elvis tour bus had to stop to fix a flat."But all that's about to change when Jonas McCleary comes to town. Excited once at the thought of being a policeman, Jonas managed to get on the force in a larger city, but after a couple of years busting vandals, breaking up domestic fights and arresting illegal immigrants, Jonas has become very discouraged. When he learns Sand Bluff is hiring a detective, he leaps in head first. At last, a chance to don plain clothes and look cool in a quiet little town where the only murder Sand Bluff ever has is the occasional cat that wanders into the street as pickups begin leaving the Blu Lite Lounge at two a.m.Jonas is feeling great. Only investigation he will have now is the quest for Miss Right. After all, Jonas it hitting close to thirty and it's time he thought about having a family. But his third day into his new profession, Jonas gets hit by the big one: Murder. Not a cat. A human being. At first, the officer who found him in the alley behind the Blu Lite thought he was just a drunk, but the drunk turned out to have two bullet holes in his head.Jonas is so new in town he doesn't know anyone. He hasn't got a clue as to why someone would shoot a stranger in the alley. Just another stupid bar fight? Robbery? Did the killer dump the body there? Jonas is determined to find out, but before he can really get started, Twyla Peters, beautiful wife of insurance agent Jim Peters and Sand Bluff's registered hussy, is found lying in a pool of blood. As Jonas begins his investigation he not only gets acquainted with many of the townsfolk who despite some being a little off the chart, apparently lead quiet honest existences, but he also meets Roxie Hathaway. He can't stop thinking about Roxie. Could she be Miss Right? But as Jonas investigates, problems turn up, problems and clues that lead him down some of Sand Bluff's dark and dangerous alleys where outsiders should never go. The Sand Bluff Murders looks at a murder investigation through the eyes of Jonas McCleary, just a regular guy who was looking for nothing more than a quiet little chance to play detective and find a really nice girl. If he manages to survive, he may just end up with what he wanted."Reading this tale will be like having Jonas sitting in an easy chair across from you and telling you what happened." - Anne K. Edwards"This investigation has a lot of twists and the very moment you think that the case is solved, bam, another surprise." - Library Cat

About the Author So what about me? I'm me. I'm a private eye. I work alone.I wear a fedora and a trench coat and pack an 11 mm Marley I bought at the Archie Goodwin estate sale. I've been around. I know which end the slugs come out of. But 11mm slugs? hard to come by these days. People say I've got attitude. Attitude they don't like. I get that a lot.The cops and me? We work toward the same end, but we're like water and electricity. They think I cramp their style. They hate that I don't play by their rules.Dealing with the cops I usually end up needing a lawyer. I need one now. The last one I had fell off the back of an ambulance and got run over by a speeding Cooper. I'm alone and on my own. It's a mean life. I'm used to it.  When my casebook's empty -- and it's empty a lot -- I write books.Okay, that picture's not really me. I'm just a mild-mannered fellow who loves mysteries. I sit at my desk and drink coffee, piddle around on the computer and daydream. Marley? What's a Marley? I've never seen one. I don't think there ever was such a thing. I think Archie just made the name up along with the Heron he used to drive. I've never gone strapped (except for cash), and I've never shot anybody. Nobody's ever shot me. My wife got shot at once, but that's another story. I've been happily married to the beautiful Irma since 1967. While my head's in the clouds, she helps keep my feet on the ground. That ain't easy. I'm sure people in law enforcement snort sometimes at boo-boos they run across in crime fiction. They may think writers are stupid or simply ignorant. FYI we may or may not know what we're writing about, but in writing there's a loophole that covers this. It's called poetic license. it's legal. I hope you'll be able to enjoy some of my books. If you do, tell your friends. If you don't, please keep quiet about it and try another one.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Light-hearted murder mystery By Martha A. Cheves "A corpse?" I smiled. Like a dead body? Oh yeah! I was supposed to take this seriously? Only thing people killed around Sand Bluff were lots of bottles of beer and the occasional careless cat that got in the way of a speeding pickup. I checked out the town's reputation before I ever applied for the job. This was supposed to be a cool job with a badge, easy money and a little authority in a small town where nothing ever happens - that's what I signed on for. Okay, let him have his little joke. Maybe this was a sort of initiation or something.Cheif Castillo stroked his mustache and smiled grimly. "our Officer Ackers didn't even know the guy was dead. Officer Ackers thought the stiff was just drunk. He dragged the body to his patrol car and brought him in to sober up." Chief Castillo splayed both dark hands on the desk. "In doing so of course he totally f... up the scene and manhandled the body, so I'd say you've got your work cut out for you." "My work? Are you saying this is a homicide?"Jonas McCleary was hired on with the Sand Bluff police department as the Chief Detective. Actually he was the only detective. Actually they had never had a detective before. Now that he has been on the job just three days, they have their first murder in 20 years. Way to go Jonas! Well, how hard can a murder in a small town be to solve? Turns out it was pretty difficult, especially when two more bodies turn up.Author C. M. Albrecht has written what I call an enjoyable 'light-hearted' murder mystery that includes a little humor and a lot of questions without so much gore and strong language. As hard as I tried to determine who the guilty person was I just about had it near the end but still couldn't connect them with all three murders. This book will keep you in suspense and keep you guessing. I really enjoy this Author's style of writing.

Carl Albrecht c.m.albrecht By dan hopkins this guy is james patterson maybe not re born but is a great Author every book can't put it down I read at night this keeps up all night sometimes until the sun comes up he has 13 books he's almost 90 years oldI've done a little research artist, master chef, like a pro play any instrument and were talking the hard ones clarinet, trumpet, guitar, master of all so goes for his books just started a few years ago but here again master this man is a master of all I could write more trust me he's a veteran seen and done it all by the way really surprised that him and his wife Irma are not overweight both in my terms are not skinny but almost (master chef) perfect to be honest this is the first in a series many books before all are great!!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Murder mystery By Roses are Amber The Sand Bluff Murders are set in a small fictional town in northern California. Jonas Cleary has applied for the post of detective, he likes the idea of a small sleepy town where he can settle down and hopefully start a family. So when a dead body turns up, the first in twenty years, he's not sure if the other officers are pulling a prank on the newbie. When the corpse proves to be real Jonas finds himself deep in his first homicide. He must try to put the pieces of the puzzle together with the help of the local townsfolk. When the body is identified they find the man was a stranger, and Jonas must try to reason what brought him to Sand Bluff.A second dead body has Jonas trying to discover if the two murders are possibly connected or unfortunate separate cases. Fingers point in all directions for suspects, but Jonas must make up his own mind and keeping some of his cards close to his chest has it's benefits in the end. This story has lots of potential, I liked Jonas' hat it had a recurring theme throughout the book. I could picture Chief Castillo, Larry and Twyla and the Whitlocks and several of the other characters, I would have loved to see a much wider and sharper use of words to describe all the characters in the book, many of the woman were described in derogatory terms which will put off female readers. There is plenty of scope to tighten much of the writing, written in the first person it is very conversational, for example "I counted about a dozen parked cars", this would be better as "I counted a dozen parked cars", a police officer would be astute enough to count them rather than guess.Progress for the solving of the cases reflects the sleepy town until the end when several more police issues rise to finish in a neat ending. I would like to see another proof read of the book and a possible change to the book cover, I felt it was too busy and confused the potential buyer's eye. As I said the book has great potential but needs a few good teaks to get it noticed in today's very competitive market. This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.

By A Customer Star Surgeon tells the story of Dal Timgar, the first alien ever to graduate from the universally prestigious earth medical schools. To become a full-fledged star surgeon, Dal must first fight the prejudices of his superiors, and then the rigors of an interstellar emergency. This book represents Alan Nourse at his best. Writing about a subject dear to his heart (he was a doctor himself), he created a very entertaining Sci-Fi story.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Believable and Entertaining By A Customer I found the star surgeon's character well developed by the author. The detail provided of the surgeon's thoughts and feelings were more then enough to enable me to strongly identify with him and the plot had plenty of variety to keep the story interesting. I read this in about 1964 while in the 7th grade and greatly enjoyed it.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. There's more to this book than meets the eye. By earl@issues-mag.com First, I believe several Star Trek concepts may have been based on some part of this book (then again, I'm not well versed in Sci Fi so Nourse may have based these element on Campbell or someone else even earlier, so if I didn't get this totally right someone with more savvy set the record straight). The hero, who is of a different race making this book about how alien we preceive aliens, also has a empathic relationship with a little creature that sits on his shoulder and is awfully much like a Tribble. Also the concept of an intellegent parasite and sybolic relationships pre-date Star Trek Next Generation and Deep Space Nine concepts of the Trill as well as Stargate concepts of the Gu-a-uld.This book will teach young readers that things aren't always as they appear and that you have to dig deeper and look beyond the superficial! It also teaches them not to use a crutch! Some very advanced concepts for even adult sci-fi, but aimed at an audience 9 - 14 years old.Good, intellegent reading.

If you’re a sports fan, you know James Duthie.   The biggest games, the biggest trades, the juiciest rumours—chances are Duthie is the guy you tuned in to hear talk about them. There are other experts and insiders, stats guys and analysts, but no one else who can talk about sports with the humour, the knowledge, and the charisma Duthie brings to every event he covers. He also makes the best spoof videos. The Guy on the Left tells the story of Duthie’s career in broadcasting, from a nerdy appearance on a game show to chatting with Tiger Woods in the men’s room at The Masters. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at celebrated moments like Sidney Crosby’s famous game-winning goal at the Vancouver Olympics, but also less celebrated insights, like the disclosure that sports broadcasters often aren’t wearing pants on air. There are stories about goofing around with NHL superstars like Roberto Luongo and Anze Kopitar. There are also stories about wandering into the wrong house after walking his dog and surprising his neighbour in her underwear. His stories can also be serious. Tragedy strikes more than once in the sports world. Most notably, he had to go to air on the evening of September 11, 2001. His reflections on the way sport is part of all of our lives, from the athletes and sports figures on the planes to the kids who lost coaches and parents, are a powerful reminder of both the importance of sport and how lucky we all are to be part of it. Funny, thoughtful, self-deprecating, and wry, The Guy on the Left is everything fans love about James Duthie.

This book provides unique systems that were developed, honed, and tweaked over my college years. I create systems for academic work that give students the most problems and that are the most mysterious. For example, I give a step-by-step process for efficiently writing a strong research paper. Many students do not know where to begin or get stalled along the process. My method provides a detailed map from the beginning to the end. Many times the hardest part of the paper writing process is the very beginning – choosing a topic and an argument. This was certainly a problem for me. I read many writing books, but the advice never hammered down an effective way for finding a topic and creating an argument. I provide the reasoning and detailed methods for nailing down a paper topic and argument. For instance, I have a chapter filled with paper primers that will fuel the reader’s creativity when trying to find a topic and argument for her papers. The book’s other chapters provide similar systems, which provide both reasoning behind the method as well as examples that flesh out how to implement the system. Too many times books that offer advice on how to succeed in college provide generic advice that students already know, but the students continue to face the same challenges that are hard to wrap one’s hands around. This book brushes aside the murky clouds surrounding those challenges, and it explains simply and systematically how to tackle them by understanding the mechanics behind the problems and the systems that solve those problems.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. GREAT BOOK! By University Advisor I recommend this book to my best students and advisees. The writing system in this book for writing research papers is excellent! It is a step-by-step procedure that takes the mystery out of writing a paper and allows the student to know exactly what the next step is in the process. An "A" paper is almost assured with this method. This is not a general system you have read about before. It is the author's personal system which he developed while in college after he read just about everything on the topic of writing and came to the conclusion it wasn't specific enough.Other highlights include tips on how to study for exams (spoiler: concentrate on lectures - not reading), how to remember dates, "paper primers" to help in finding a good writing topic, how to get a good class participation grade and the best ways to communicate with professors. The author wrote this book from his personal experience and relates his best college success tips to the reader. This book works well for serious high school, university and Masters students.

It is one of the best books I've read for students going into college, both high achieving students and those students who need extra help. It gives alot of specific suggestions for studying and homework, writing a term paper, interacting with professors, and more. I highly recommend this book. I am buying some more as gifts for graduates this year.

On an alien world, where the equator is so hot it's the scorch belt that divides the planet into two separate ecological zones. Here is where the ocean boils -- and here is where a daring exploration team attempts an ocean crossing to discover how the local life forms migrate from the northern hemisphere to the southern and back again. An old-fashioned science fiction adventure from a master storyteller.
