Review Café Reads Where books and beans are celebrated TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2012 Special Blend: The Sand Bluff Murders Rating: 8/10 in Mystery/Thriller Cambridge Books, 2012 More information: writewordsinc.com/ With a touch of humor and romance, The Sand Bluff Murders throws a likeable lead into a chaotic and intriguing mystery plot. As the mystery unravels, the first-person narration forges an important bond between reader and lead character, whose wit and sarcasm endear him to the reader. The writing is polished and practical. What really grabbed me was the dialogue, which captures the essence of a conversation without insulting the readers' intelligence. Albrecht shows his skill and precision as an author when he summarizes the protagonist's back story later in the book, rather than pummeling the reader upfront with a lengthy biography. I was also impressed with Albrecht's pacing and chapter breaks. Albrecht clearly understands the mystery genre and has assembled his suspects, alibis and intrigues accordingly. Overall, I highly recommend this book. The Sand Bluff Murders--with its witty narration, charming protagonist and solid mystery plot--is definitely worth the read.
From the Inside Flap Sand Bluff, California, a very small town long ago bypassed by the freeway. A quiet little place where, according to one resident, "Most excitement this town ever seen was that time back in sixty-two whenever that Elvis tour bus had to stop to fix a flat."But all that's about to change when Jonas McCleary comes to town. Excited once at the thought of being a policeman, Jonas managed to get on the force in a larger city, but after a couple of years busting vandals, breaking up domestic fights and arresting illegal immigrants, Jonas has become very discouraged. When he learns Sand Bluff is hiring a detective, he leaps in head first. At last, a chance to don plain clothes and look cool in a quiet little town where the only murder Sand Bluff ever has is the occasional cat that wanders into the street as pickups begin leaving the Blu Lite Lounge at two a.m.Jonas is feeling great. Only investigation he will have now is the quest for Miss Right. After all, Jonas it hitting close to thirty and it's time he thought about having a family. But his third day into his new profession, Jonas gets hit by the big one: Murder. Not a cat. A human being. At first, the officer who found him in the alley behind the Blu Lite thought he was just a drunk, but the drunk turned out to have two bullet holes in his head.Jonas is so new in town he doesn't know anyone. He hasn't got a clue as to why someone would shoot a stranger in the alley. Just another stupid bar fight? Robbery? Did the killer dump the body there? Jonas is determined to find out, but before he can really get started, Twyla Peters, beautiful wife of insurance agent Jim Peters and Sand Bluff's registered hussy, is found lying in a pool of blood. As Jonas begins his investigation he not only gets acquainted with many of the townsfolk who despite some being a little off the chart, apparently lead quiet honest existences, but he also meets Roxie Hathaway. He can't stop thinking about Roxie. Could she be Miss Right? But as Jonas investigates, problems turn up, problems and clues that lead him down some of Sand Bluff's dark and dangerous alleys where outsiders should never go. The Sand Bluff Murders looks at a murder investigation through the eyes of Jonas McCleary, just a regular guy who was looking for nothing more than a quiet little chance to play detective and find a really nice girl. If he manages to survive, he may just end up with what he wanted."Reading this tale will be like having Jonas sitting in an easy chair across from you and telling you what happened." - Anne K. Edwards"This investigation has a lot of twists and the very moment you think that the case is solved, bam, another surprise." - Library Cat
About the Author So what about me? I'm me. I'm a private eye. I work alone.I wear a fedora and a trench coat and pack an 11 mm Marley I bought at the Archie Goodwin estate sale. I've been around. I know which end the slugs come out of. But 11mm slugs? hard to come by these days. People say I've got attitude. Attitude they don't like. I get that a lot.The cops and me? We work toward the same end, but we're like water and electricity. They think I cramp their style. They hate that I don't play by their rules.Dealing with the cops I usually end up needing a lawyer. I need one now. The last one I had fell off the back of an ambulance and got run over by a speeding Cooper. I'm alone and on my own. It's a mean life. I'm used to it. When my casebook's empty -- and it's empty a lot -- I write books.Okay, that picture's not really me. I'm just a mild-mannered fellow who loves mysteries. I sit at my desk and drink coffee, piddle around on the computer and daydream. Marley? What's a Marley? I've never seen one. I don't think there ever was such a thing. I think Archie just made the name up along with the Heron he used to drive. I've never gone strapped (except for cash), and I've never shot anybody. Nobody's ever shot me. My wife got shot at once, but that's another story. I've been happily married to the beautiful Irma since 1967. While my head's in the clouds, she helps keep my feet on the ground. That ain't easy. I'm sure people in law enforcement snort sometimes at boo-boos they run across in crime fiction. They may think writers are stupid or simply ignorant. FYI we may or may not know what we're writing about, but in writing there's a loophole that covers this. It's called poetic license. it's legal. I hope you'll be able to enjoy some of my books. If you do, tell your friends. If you don't, please keep quiet about it and try another one.

Only thing people killed around Sand Bluff were lots of bottles of beer and the occasional careless cat that got in the way of a speeding pickup. I checked out the town's reputation before I ever applied for the job. This was supposed to be a cool job with a badge, easy money and a little authority in a small town where nothing ever happens - that's what I signed on for. Okay, let him have his little joke. Maybe this was a sort of initiation or something.Cheif Castillo stroked his mustache and smiled grimly. "our Officer Ackers didn't even know the guy was dead. Officer Ackers thought the stiff was just drunk. He dragged the body to his patrol car and brought him in to sober up." Chief Castillo splayed both dark hands on the desk. "In doing so of course he totally f... up the scene and manhandled the body, so I'd say you've got your work cut out for you." "My work? Are you saying this is a homicide?"Jonas McCleary was hired on with the Sand Bluff police department as the Chief Detective. Actually he was the only detective. Actually they had never had a detective before. Now that he has been on the job just three days, they have their first murder in 20 years. Way to go Jonas! Well, how hard can a murder in a small town be to solve? Turns out it was pretty difficult, especially when two more bodies turn up.Author C. M. Albrecht has written what I call an enjoyable 'light-hearted' murder mystery that includes a little humor and a lot of questions without so much gore and strong language. As hard as I tried to determine who the guilty person was I just about had it near the end but still couldn't connect them with all three murders. This book will keep you in suspense and keep you guessing. I really enjoy this Author's style of writing.

Jonas Cleary has applied for the post of detective, he likes the idea of a small sleepy town where he can settle down and hopefully start a family. So when a dead body turns up, the first in twenty years, he's not sure if the other officers are pulling a prank on the newbie. When the corpse proves to be real Jonas finds himself deep in his first homicide. He must try to put the pieces of the puzzle together with the help of the local townsfolk. When the body is identified they find the man was a stranger, and Jonas must try to reason what brought him to Sand Bluff.A second dead body has Jonas trying to discover if the two murders are possibly connected or unfortunate separate cases. Fingers point in all directions for suspects, but Jonas must make up his own mind and keeping some of his cards close to his chest has it's benefits in the end. This story has lots of potential, I liked Jonas' hat it had a recurring theme throughout the book. I could picture Chief Castillo, Larry and Twyla and the Whitlocks and several of the other characters, I would have loved to see a much wider and sharper use of words to describe all the characters in the book, many of the woman were described in derogatory terms which will put off female readers. There is plenty of scope to tighten much of the writing, written in the first person it is very conversational, for example "I counted about a dozen parked cars", this would be better as "I counted a dozen parked cars", a police officer would be astute enough to count them rather than guess.Progress for the solving of the cases reflects the sleepy town until the end when several more police issues rise to finish in a neat ending. I would like to see another proof read of the book and a possible change to the book cover, I felt it was too busy and confused the potential buyer's eye. As I said the book has great potential but needs a few good teaks to get it noticed in today's very competitive market. This review is based on a free copy of the book given to me by the author.
