I bought it one day on impulse, when I was down after having a story rejected. I gave the first couple of sentences a quick look, and I was hooked. This book has such insight, it changed my whole perception of fiction. What Budrys does, is teach you not how to become a writer, but how to become a *storyteller*. You will find in this book no talk of dialogue, or tenses, or sentence structure, only of creating a good *story*. Algis Budrys is a great writer, and he's an amazing teacher of writing. Right after I bought this book, I sold my first story. I sold two more the following month. Algis, thank you!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Wonderful Little Book By Gary Townsend This book is to short story writing what Strunk and White's THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE is to writing, in general, and grammar, in particular. You'll not soon find another book that speaks to this subject with such clarity and forthrightness. It breaks through the clichés of formulating the story problem and a story's construct (beginning, middle, and end) in a way that is easily understood. This book is *more* than worth its price, and well worth the wait.EDIT (19 Aug 2009): It's been several years since I wrote this review, and I've read the book several times. I'm currently reading the book again, and I felt that this review needed updating.I still give the book 5-stars. HOWEVER,...The appendix entitled "Ideas... How They Work and How to Fix Them" is, in my opinion, the most annoying part of the book. It is over-intellectualized into near meaninglessness. A couple of short excerpts will suffice:"Exactly what happens immediately beyond Gate C is something so complex that we have had to found the entire science of psychology in a thus far only partially successful effort to understand it. But observation indicates that many organisms have been educated to process all data at this point only into storage bins with lawful values. This is 'sinful,' that is not; this is 'good,' that is 'bad'; this is 'allowed,' that is not; etc. A few organisms, however, appear to move data into a different set of processing gates, and the sign over that establishment reads Conditionally Valid. In other words, artists have a Gate Da and, in addition--blush to admit it--Gate Db."...and..."Different prescriptions suggest themselves for different causes of Gate X failure. Taking the causes in the order of simplicity--and thus working our way toward the situation of the beginning writer--these include:(1) Death.(2) Organic defects in the brain short of death, which require the intervention of a neurologist. These may produce (...)"And so the appendix goes, ad infinitum, ad nauseum. For a book entitled WRITING TO THE POINT, Budrys belabors ALL his points in this appendix, and strikes a manner that even Strunk and White would've excoriated. The end result is that this appendix is very laborious reading and incredibly tiresome. Why Budrys felt the need to take what starts off as a direct, nearly dogmatic, approach to writing instruction, and then to devolve into this mind-numbing morass, I'll never understand. What he said in this appendix on ideas could have been said much more easily.

I think an artist can actually relate to the methods in this book. It has that technical flair for an artist, but simple enough for the layman. June snuck in some edutainment in her instruction manual.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Seems easy enough By Jerry Always willing to learn something new and with this book you can learn how to draw a couple of cats and dogs. Step by step instructions provided.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting drawing guide By Kendrick I'm so pleased with this guide because the drawings are actually adorable and cute. I want to draw dogs and cats because I love animals and I want to draw it for a birthday card for someone. I followed the instructions and it turned out okay, I don't draw well so it wasn't as good as the illustrations but I found the instructions and illustrations helpful for a beginner like me. Hopefully I can draw different breeds of dogs and cats in the future. Overall, good collection of drawings for dogs and cats and easy to follow instructions.

Jean-Phillip Goutier was found murdered on the steps of the Cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The newspapers were calling it the Ghede murder.

Goutier’s corpse had been left in the same sitting position favored by the Vodou deity known as Ghede. His legs were crossed, a cigar was dangling in his mouth, and dark sunglasses sat upon his eyes.

Policeman Samuel Legros, a three year veteran, was the first gendarmerie on the scene and later given the task of investigating. Not only did he quickly apprehend a suspect but he managed to stumble into a feud between two wealthy Haitian families with strong political ties. Solving this murder could be a blessing, or a curse.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. this book stands on its own and weaves a wonderful tale replete with Haitian scenery By C. Bouyea J.M. Lominy delievers another winner with Policeman Legros. Fast paced and suspenseful, yet delightful and well written, Policeman Legros serves as a prequel (in a sense) to Lominy's much praised debut book, The Deadly Rose, and its successors. If you havent read the Deadly Rose, dont let that stop you from reading Policeman Legros. Short and to the point, this book stands on its own and weaves a wonderful tale replete with Haitian scenery, history, and culture. In fact, after reading this book you will want to pick up the Deadly Rose and see the progession and development of Lominy's characters. Great poolside read for the summer and a wonderful introduction to Lominy and his word play if you arent already familiar with his work.Kudos

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. J.M. Lominy continues to weave his magic By guy j elie J.M. Lominy continues to weave his magic with words so colorful and descriptive that the reader finds himself in the middle of the action. The rich details of this riveting tale bring the history, the people and the culture to life. It's a violent story of murder, but the characters are so well explored, that love, friendship, loyalty and other noble emotions find their place alongside the sordid motivations for this violence. If this is your first book by JM Lominy, make sure you pick up "The Deadly Rose". Looking forward to the next one!

By camel0596 This is a fast paced, suspenseful book filled with twists that kept me turning pages and never expected such a twist ending! Love J. M. Lominy' s writing style! He fills his stories with intriguing characters and Haitian history. I cannot wait to read The Fatal Rose, which is book 2 of the Assassin's Tale. First one is The Deadly Rose, which again, is extraordinary, suspenseful and filled with action and Haitian history! I highly recommend all of J.M.'s books, you will not be disappointed! Congratulations my friend, on another excellent book!

Famous for his fashion portraits and experimentation with still life images, Irving Penn (1917–2009) ranks as one of the foremost photographers of the 20th century. In an illustrious career that spanned nearly 70 years, Penn was a master of both black-and-white and color photography, and his revival of platinum printing in the 1960s and 1970s was a catalyst for significant change in the art world.   Drawing from the extensive holdings of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, including a major gift from The Irving Penn Foundation, this magnificent catalogue compiles 161 of Penn’s iconic images, including a number of unpublished works. Beautifully designed and illustrated, Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty accompanies the first retrospective exhibition of Penn’s work in nearly 20 years and features photographs from all stages of his career, including street scenes from the late 1930s, celebrity portraits, Parisian fashion photographs, and more private studio images. Merry A. Foresta’s captivating essay introduces this photographer to a younger generation and delves into Penn’s use of photography to respond to social and cultural change, speaking to the depths of human existence.

There are numerous books on Irving Penn, this one distinguishes itself in that it covers his career comprehensively, from early "Walker Evans" style documentation to the work that made him famous. Penn is, arguably, our greatest photographer, his grace and eloquence has few rivals. If you are going to buy on book of Irving Penn photographs this is a worthy addition to your library.

R.I.P FAMOUS DEATHS - Celebrities die, the famous and Infamous die the same as all of us. And sometimes they die in strange and unfortunate ways. The beloved Robin Williams slipping a belt around his neck to end his torment and everyone knows how General Custer died. John Denver loved his ‘Rocky Mountain High’ and did nothing more than run out of gasoline to end his life, poor Princess Diana survived the crash only to die a little while later. James Brady was there at President Reagan’s side and was also shot by John Hinkley Jr. but died of his wounds 33 yeas later. “Dying is easy; comedy is hard.” – Edmund Kean, 1787-1833 These last words, allegedly said by the Shakespearean stage actor Kean on his deathbed, tell a lot about our perception of the meaning of life and death, as well as how we normally deal with it. Many may contend that it is the other way around: that comedy is easy and dying is hard. However, in the circles of well-known comedians, this saying is accepted as a truism. The comedian is all too familiar with the humiliation of a stand-up comedy act gone wrong, where he has failed to elicit the expected laughter from his audience. It is an indignity that he fears, and fears justly. This book puts life in perspective inasmuch as those reaching lofty heights and those having the adoration of millions die too. FAMOUS DEATHS – describes the unfortunate last few paragraphs in the book of life of many celebrities and well-known names. We never like to see our icons and heroes as mere mortals but when the Grim Reaper comes – any status no longer matters.

It is filled with brief descriptions of the final days, hours, or minutes of celebrities interspersed with the last words of the famous and infamous. Some of the "last words" are used more than once.Strangely enough, this is a relaxing read. There is no angst or high drama, only a brief note about a tragic event.I have deducted one star for the numerous errors.

I was a bit surprised of how some of these celebrities died, like Marilyn Monroe's death. All along I thought she died of drugs but based on this book, there was a conspiracy theory that she was murdered by the FBI ordered by JFK so not to expose their affair. Such a revelation! This is a fun read!

By Amazon Customer I enjoyed reading about the lives and deaths of famous, infamous celebrities, others I only heard in movies and some I barely heard of. A great mixed of old and new. But I was impressed by the details and how it was simply presented. I especially liked the "one last thing to say" portion. A very informative book.

Dr. Chris Alexander, a borderline sociopath and technological genius, has designed an advanced cybernetic life form from prototype decommissioned military drones and top-secret experimental DARPA technology. The HADroid was supposed to be a military grade robot with the transplanted heart and brain of a human donor that would transform it into a devastating state-of-the-art war machine when activated by its onboard human operator.

When the mad doctor steals the dying child of a simple Amish couple and transplants the brain and cardiovascular system of their dying 11-year-old autistic son into the incredibly lethal robot, the dark forces of government come looking for their investment.

Dr. Alexander and the monster escape into another Amish community to hide among the plain folk. Frank, the autistic 11-year-old boy trapped inside the body of the world's most deadly robot, befriends another child who will help the prisoner inside the machine. Tensions arise among the plain and pacifistic yet closed minded Amish as they begin to suspect just what kind of technological monstrosity is hiding among them. Before long, hard men who do the government's most dirty deeds will come looking for a killing machine only to find a boy named Frank who has the power to defend a closed society from the worst of the world.

Corporate/Government bad guys still want power and state of the art weapons. Children are born with disadvantages and die. The innocent get hurt in the crossfire between right and wrong. And one mad doctor wants to give the most fragile of lives a chance at something normal. Even if it means putting it inside a DARPA Drone that's more Terminator than the T-1000. But along with that broken child goes the heart of a champion. And... maybe we'll see that the weapons of the future might need to think for us when we fail to. Maybe we'll see that the innocent can be strong in the darkest of humanity's final moments.Monster?Weapon System?Human?Bunker fires on all cylinders with a thrill ride that will break your heart... and give you hope.

Swardstrom One of the best things about the Indie Book Revolution is that readers have the chance to read stories that never would have seen the light of day under the previous model of publishing. Compelling, interesting, and engaging stories that would have been shunned by the New York publishing houses. Yet thanks to the digital revolution, we get to enjoy these imaginative tales for ourselves. We get to be the Gatekeepers.Michael Bunker’s newest book Brother, Frankenstein is one of those books. Of course, we don’t know for sure, but it is too daring, too out of the box, too…Amish…to be a traditionally published book. We like our Amish in neat little romance books. A girl in an apron on the front cover, clutching a bouquet of flowers, and a covered wagon driving away in the distance. There’s too much risk to allow the Amish to mix with sci-fi in the way Bunker does in Brother, Frankenstein. But in that risk, in taking a leap of faith that readers can cope with “out of the box,” Bunker has achieved a wonderful book that transcends many of the books you would be able to find on the shelf of Barnes and Noble today. In a way, this was always meant to be. The simple life of the Amish, combined with the world’s first truly science fiction story – Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The moral dilemmas that Dr. Frankenstein encountered and dealt with in the groundbreaking novel are presented here as well. In Bunker’s work, Dr. Chris Alexander has a military grade robot body that is just in need of a heart and brain. The donations come from an autistic Amish boy who was dying anyway. Dr. Alexander believes he is giving the boy a gift. Another chance at life…in a body that can wipe entire towns off the map with the firepower contained within. As Dr. Alexander goes on the run with Frank, the government sends in an agent who is as ruthless as he is skilled at his job – Cyrano Dresser. Dresser approaches the search for Frank and the Doc as his own White Whale, and has no problem in running over whoever gets in his way. He is a special type of evil villain and I can totally see the character on the big screen. So, with the government hunting them down, where do the fugitives go? Amish country of course. There they fit in (as best they can), and Alexander works to contain Frank’s emotions. Emotions aren’t Frank’s friends – that’s because when he gets mad, he transforms into a Voltron-type robot capable of mass destruction. Not quite Amish. In the end, I found the book to be quite enjoyable and Bunker’s best work to date. Pennsylvania was a Bunker’s previous attempt at “Amish Sci-Fi” but he’s refined his style and his pacing in Brother, Frankenstein was much improved. The stakes are high for Alexander and his experiment, and the emotional payoff for the reader and for Frank is worth it.

By Chris P Every once in a while, a book comes along that accomplishes something truly unique. When Michael Bunker’s the author, that happens more often than not. With Brother, Frankenstein, the man who broke new ground by creating a whole new sub-genre called Amish Sci-Fi has done it again. A government’s need to exercise complete control in its rather ironic quest to “preserve freedom”; technology run amuck, fueled by the hubris of a scientist with a god complex; and the needs of an autistic boy to understand the world around him, to grow as a human being—all come together in the thrill-ride that is Brother, Frankenstein.I won’t summarize the plot here—you can read the book’s description for that. But I do want to talk about what I think Bunker does well. First, he adopts the first-person perspective of his scientist- god-wannabe, Chris Alexander, for most of the narrative. In third person, Alexander would be easy to write off as a myopic sociopath too blind by his own self-regard to see the costs of the moral choices he makes. But once you’re inside his head, you realize it’s not so easy to pigeon-hole his motivations. His intentions, if murky, are not purely evil. And it’s hard to argue with the “good” he does by saving young autistic boy Frank and giving him a chance to live and grow and learn—even if it means turning Frank into a HADroid killing machine. Exploring Alexander’s motivations and presenting us with a narrator that is both flawed and suspect ramps up the tension (and interest level) for the reader. Who wants a perfect, morally unambiguous storyteller? Where’s the fun in that? Bunker’s unreliable narrator challenges us, and anything worth having—including a satisfying reading experience—is worth working for.Familiar Bunker themes are here too: the government’s need to control its population to preserve its power; fifth columnists working to undermine from the inside; and a window on the world of the Amish, who become a place of refuge for Alexander and his creation.Oh yeah, there’s that. Alexander steals Frank's brain from his parents (evil!) and places it in a DARPA-funded experimental combat robot, which keeps the boy from dying (okay, LESS evil). Alexander does everything he can to keep his experiment (which happens to now include the evolving consciousness of this young Amish boy) alive. He even helps Frank embrace his Amish roots, inevitably bringing the raison d’etre of his killer creation into conflict with the moral center of our protagonist, the boy Frank, as he embraces Amish values. See what I mean by complex? But complex doesn’t equal a boring reading experience—not by a long shot. Constantly pursued by a government Black Ops unit even the regular Black Ops guys don’t know about—and foreshadowing another controlling authority Bunker readers will be familiar with—Alexander and his experiment-cum-adopted-son seek refuge in an Amish community. The climax of the tale is, to put it mildly, emotionally explosive.Fast-paced, thoughtful, provocative, innovative, and the best thing Bunker has written to date. Like Sci-Fi? Want your heart AND your head engaged by an excellent story of intrigue and immersive prose? Brother, this is the tale for you.FYI: I was provided an ARC of this novel in exchange for an objective review.
