Bond vs. Bond: The Many Faces of 007 By JMM [[VIDEOID:6a6fc583b746ca82c70a4d12a90d716c]]As someone who is absolutely fascinated with the James Bond film franchise, the book "Bond vs. Bond" is a great resource and a nostalgic look back at the series. The book primarily focuses on the different actors that played bond throughout the years. These actors all obviously had a different look and they also had very different approaches to acting the role of Bond. Anyone familiar with the series knows that these differences between the actors led to unique takes on the character. No matter who your favorite Bond was - whether it be Connery, Moore, Craig, or someone else - you will find him represented in the book.Still, there are things about Bond that are universal no matter who is playing the character: his patriotism, his love of women, his affinity for a good drink, and his skill with a gun. Many of these and other subjects are briefly discussed in the many sidebars (which are scattered throughout the book) - Cars; Gadgets; Villains; Bond Girls; and so on. The book includes images from the films as well as behind the scenes photos which are fascinating to see.The early pages of the book discuss author Ian Fleming, his early life and inspirations, and of course his 007 novels (14 in total were published). As someone who was always more into the films than the novels, it's fascinating to learn about the origins of the character on the page and about the stories that Fleming told in the literary realm (from which most of the movies derive).Bond is one of the few movie characters who has survived multiple cast changes and remains embraced by audiences. Agent 007 is bigger than any one actor; each one adds new dimensions to the character. This book is a great read and a nice piece to commemorate over 50 years of one of cinema's most enduring icons.*Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group for providing me a review copy of the book.

BOND, THE MANY FACES OF 007 is an entertaining examination of the various actors that have portrayed Ian Fleming's super-spy over the past half century. Along with detailing the many faces of Bond...James Bond, Simpson provides an informative, well-illustrated behind-the-scenes look at the world of 007 movies. A 2015 Race Point Publishing release, BOND VS. BOND should prove catnip to Bond aficionados.Opening with a short biography of Ian Fleming, Simpson reviews the various Bond novels/short story collections penned by Fleming and his successors like John Gardner and Jeffrey Deaver. He then launches into a mano-a-mano review of Bond as portrayed by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. He ends with sections on the CASINO ROYALE 'other Bonds,' 'the 'Essential Bond' and a JB filmography/bibliography. The book also features many entertaining side-bars on Bond villains, Bond girls, cars, weapons, 007 music, etc. along with tons of b&w and color photographs, movie posters and illustrations. Visually the book is a delight.Reading through Simpson's comments, I realized how disappointing most of the Bonds have been. To my jaded mind, Sean Connery and Daniel Craig have been the best Bonds. Both had a combination of charm and ruthlessness that hit the mark. George Lazenby was a blink-and-he's-gone Bond. Moore was Bond lite; Dalton, Bond dark; and Brosnan was forever pursing his lips and flaring his nostrils. In any case, BOND VS. BOND is a fun and entertaining look at the cinema's most beloved spy. Recommended.

I stopped reading this one after wading through such stinkers as (1) Claiming Albert Broccoli was the director of the first four Bond movies (page 73); (2) The photo caption on page 86 shows the character of Domino in Thunderball listed as the villainess Fiona; (3) "A selection of toys released to tie in with You Only Live Twice" on page 88 is in fact a photo of actual movie props from the Bond exhibit at the Imperial War Museum; (4) The photo on page 93 shows behind "the scenes on Diamonds Are Forever as Sean Connery and Jill St. John prepare to shoot a scene with Bambi and Thumper." Contrary to the actual scene in which St. John's character is nowhere to be found; (5) Page 100 shows a scene "at the end of On Her Majesty's Secret Service." In fact, the photo was staged for the press at the Hotel Palacio in Estoril and was nowhere near the film ending's actual location. There are much better Bond books on the market. This one seems thrown together from secondary sources with little or no fact checking. I would not have written this review if all the others had not been so glowing. Buyer beware!
