1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Strange Novel of the 1930's Frozen North By Stephen Vincent Kempton Charles Alden Seltzer was a very popular writer for the Pulp Magazine Argosy in the 1930's. If Seltzer is remembered at all now days it is for his very entertaining Westerns. In its day The Northern was just as popular as The Western. It really is just a Western set in a different climate. This Nothern though takes a very different twist at the third way point. This novel was originally published in six installments in the weekly Argosy Pulp Magazine in March and April 1930. It contains the original painted cover by Paul Stahr and all the interior black and white illustrations . It has been reformatted into a large easy to read size. It also contains short bios about Charles Alden Seltzer and Paul Stahr. When a large mine owner's twenty five year old son disappears our rugged hero James Fallon is sent to investigate. He embarks on a perilous journey to unravel the mystery. Meanwhile some unsavoury men are on his trail.Jim Fallon befriends Wattanooka a fierce Indian. The trail leads to a large castle like fortress that the evil Randall has constructed. Randall is a former pirate who has retreated to the frozen north. The Randall's fortress home has numerous tunnels, rooms and secret passageways. The missing youth maybe imprisoned here. Also Fallon encounters the beautiful Denise , who is Randall's ward. The entire remaining two thirds of the novel are set inside this Fortress Structure so both the title and the cover are a little misleading. But it is a fast paced exciting story with lots of imagination. The comparison so an old fashioned movie serial is an apt one. This story moves at a break neck speed. This is my fourth excursion into the New Argosy Library of books from Altus Books and all have been an excellent choices and Highly Recommended.
