About the Author Stef Wertheimer is a German-born Israeli businessman, philanthropist and former politician. In 1952, he founded the company ISCAR and eventually grew it into a multinational, multibillion-dollar corporation, later selling his stake to billionaire investor Warren Buffett in 2006. A former Member of the Knesset, he has taken an active role in Israeli policy. He lives in Jerusalem.

His story embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. He believed in himself and his ideas and did the hard work and risk taking necessary to realize his dreams. He demonstrates how it’s done.Stef’s life mirrors the history and development of the Jewish State of Israel. He fled Germany to British Palestine with his family at the age of 10, fought with the Palmach warriors in the 1948 war of independence creating the new state and has devoted his life to working for its development and for peace.His abiding belief in the necessity for Israel to develop a strong industrial base drove him to grow his own company, ISCAR, into an international power selling it to investor Warren Buffet for four billion dollars. Throughout his life he fought passionately to help others participate in industry by creating educational opportunities for workers, industrial parks for businesses in well designed centers.As one gets to know this determined man, admiration grows for his innovative and creative spirit, courage and perseverance despite what appeared to be insurmountable challenges. It is not only the feat of growing his company that defines this man. His relentless dedication to develop workplaces where Jews and Palestinians could work side by side to foster mutual understanding is an example of his vision for peace. Opportunities for a Better Israel By Kris The Habit of Work is a biography of Stef Wertheimer, an Israeli industrialist and philanthropist, who as a young boy fled Germany with his family when the Nazi’s took power. He started a small business in on the porch of his house in Palestine and gradually nurtured it to become an international manufacturing business widely respected throughout the world. The story of the growth of his business and his commitment to the state of Israel makes for interesting reading. But more important is his commitment to his country and the creative strategies he has adopted to promote a healthy economy that is inclusive of all religious and ethnic groups in the region. He has built a series of industrial parks that offer space for business and manufacturing startups, specialized training for local residents and a community resource for community meetings and cultural events. He maintains that people want to work, live their lives in peace and raise their children. By creating diverse workplaces he argues that people with differences will come to know one another and be tolerant of differences. Currently in his eighties, he continues to be an influential voice in the country that he loves. Given the backdrop of stories of conflict between Israel and its neighbors, Wertheimer promotes ideas that should be heard. It’s a must-read for anyone interested in Israeli history and current events.
