"After forty-six years of being on the road, this is the right time to look back in a way I've never done before: now and then. This is the story of my life in rock and roll -- and how the band that has meant everything to me came to define me. I'm looking forward to sharing it with you."Mick Fleetwood has been a member of the ever-evolving Fleetwood Mac, one of the world's most successful and adored bands, for over four decades. Here he tells the full and candid story of his life as one of music's greatest drummers and bandleaders, the cofounder of the deeply loved supergroup that bears his name and that of his bandmate and lifelong friend John McVie.In this intimate portrait of a life lived in music, Fleetwood vividly recalls his upbringing tapping along to every song playing on the radio, his experiences as a musician in '60s London, and the earliest permutation of the band featuring Peter Green.Play On sheds new light on Fleetwood Mac's raucous history, describing the highs and lows of being in the band that Fleetwood was determined to keep together. Here he reflects on the creation of landmark albums such as Rumours and Tusk, the great loves of his life, and the many incredible and outrageous moments of recording, touring, and living with Fleetwood Mac. Fleetwood describes these moments with honesty and immediacy, taking us to the very heart of this multilayered journey that has always been anchored in music.Through it all, from intense love to plaintive heartaches, from collaborations to confrontations, it's been the drive to play on that has prevailed. Now, then, and always, it's Fleetwood Mac.

By Michael McDonough Having read Mick's first autobiography (1990) I was expecting this book to pick up where the last one left off. Nope...this is just a rewrite of the old book with a couple of extra chapters to sum up the 25 years since his last book. If you already read his first book just go the bookstore and read the last two chapters while standing in the isle.

33 of 39 people found the following review helpful. A bland, disappointing read, with little difference from the 1990 Mick Fleetwood autobiography By Stevencap Very disappointing. I had high hopes. But this book is just barely more in-depth than the previous Mick Fleetwood autobiography (co-written with Stephen Davis, in 1990). In fact, some of the passages read almost exactly the same. Don’t believe me? Check out the description of Stevie Nicks lamenting the difficulties of the band’s first tour in ’75 (sleeping in station wagons and on amps, for example). Same quote, same wording, same concluding text to end a chapter.Ironically, in that bio, Mick Fleetwood could recall the name of the fellow who first urged him to check out Sound City studio, in December ‘74. Now, he can’t recall it. (Understandable, with the passage of time. But it points to the earlier book having some more immediacy, more key points.)Really egregious is that Anthony Bozza did a terrible job as a co-writer. There are lazy writing/spelling errors sprinkled throughout. Ie. “A” instead of “an”, “bought” instead of “brought.”And more annoying, the fact-checking is embarrassing. Examples: The first time that Waddy Wachtel is mentioned, his last name is misspelled. (I’m not a Waddy fan, but the guy is a music industry legend.) At one point Mick Jagger is mentioned as bringing his girlfriend “Anita Pallenberg” to an event. Any half-knowledgeable rock fan knows that Jagger’s woman was Marianne Faithfull. And here’s a really lame mistake: Fleetwood recounts “Oh Daddy” being recorded in a solo piano performance, to give it a late-night vibe. He means “Songbird.” It’s a dumb slip-up. But Bozza, who claims to be a Fleetwood Mac fan, should have easily caught the error. All in all, I kept waiting for the book to catch fire, to really put me there, in the action, backstage, in the studio, etc. Instead we read a lot about marital ups and downs. And the Rumours era is glossed over very quickly. The whole book should have built up to a long, intricate detailing of what that heady success meant on a day-to-day level.I will say that the admissions of a flawed life are soulful. But they’re also boring.I had assumed that Fleetwood might have worked hard and produced a real tome, like Keith Richards’ LIFE. But no such luck. My suggestion is that anyone looking to learn about Fleetwood Mac save money and just buy a used copy of the original 1990 Fleetwood bio.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable and often quite funny By Silicon Valley Girl This is a really enjoyable, often very funny memoir of Mick Fleetwood's life. Fleetwood lived the decadent rock-star life for decades, and while he doesn't exactly glorify it, he doesn't really seem to regret it, either. But he hardly has a negative word to say about anyone -- he loves all three of his ex-wives and even says that if he ever ran into the charming con man who fleeced him out of thousands of dollars, he'd probably take him out for dinner again. He's surprisingly un-gossipy about his many famous friends and acquaintances, and he doesn't blame anyone but himself for his many mistakes, both in business and in relationships. The editing could have been a lot better -- I'm no music maven, but even I know that Waddy Wachtel's last name is not "Watchell" -- and the book is sometimes a bit repetitive. But Mick's voice comes through clearly. It's a fast, fun read for anyone who wants to know a little more about the lives and times of the "Fleetwood Mac" crew. Now please excuse me while I go dig out my vinyl copy of "Bare Trees."

But after that, I found myself engaged with both his set of characters and his fantasy world, which he depicts vividly and consistently. I finished this book quickly, and discovered I wanted to read more. I hope Ferrell continues mining this rich vein of imagination.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Buckle your seatbelt Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye! By dan farmer This is one quirky book, a full-on blend of technology, magic, Tolkien, fantasy, and a whole lot of other wacky and fun stuff; the author's fervent imagination and obvious care for his created world and characters really shines through here. RGF is a real life spook working for the DoD, and I'd suspect Tol, the lead character in this book has more than a bit of himself in it. An impressive first novel, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Magic, Technology and Explosions....well, at least one By AudeKhatru I should state for the record that I know the author. He is not a close friend, but I have know him for some years. I had heard that he was writing a novel, and when I saw Goblinopolis with his name attached, I had to check it out. When I saw that it was at a special price, it was a no brainer to grab it right away. As a friend, I would probably have bought a copy at the regular price anyway, especially when it is only $4, but it was even lower than that when I got it. I only worry that he cannot have made much off my purchase.Goblinopolis attempts to do several difficult things, and while it may have its problems, the fact that it succeeds as well as it does is a testament to the skill of the author.First, the protaganist is not human. That can be very hard to do. How do you make a sympathetic character out of someone the readers have nothing in common with. One way is to drop the character into a category that every reader will know. In this case, that category is tough street cop. Tol is like characters you know and love, from Sam Spade to Mickey Spillane. Throw in the funniest sidekick I have seen in years and you have a good start.Second, the story mixes technology and magic. This has been tried often, but not done well often. From my viewpoint, I see this as being a world of technology that also has magic. Tol, is not a magical type, but the case he is on is definitely magical in nature and I think this works very well.Third, this is a completely new world, and after an exciting chapter 1, the author must present us with a relatively lengthy exposition of the background of the world of N'plork and the kingdom of Tragacanth. I worry that some readers will get bogged down here, but if you will plow through it (it is not that bad), then the story continues to live up to the opening chapter. This is a fun read, and I highly recommend it.

An extensive section on practice strategies blends concepts from learning theory, sports psychology, and Zen, and the chapter on artistry offers insight on creating expressive phrases, connecting with the audience, and developing a unique artistic voice. Violin Secrets examines overcoming performance anxiety, choosing the right music editions, being a strong section player in an orchestra, leading productive chamber music rehearsals, and winning auditions.Violin Secrets is beautifully illustrated with original drawings by T. M. Larsen, musical examples from the standard literature, and a violinist’s family tree that traces these secrets back through to the founding fathers of violin technique. The Music Secrets for the Advanced Musician series is designed for instrumentalists, singers, conductors, composers, and other instructors and professionals seeking a quick set of pointers to improve their work as performers and producers of music. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Any serious violinist should own this book By Thomas Lever If I could give this book 10 stars, I would without any hesitation. For starters it greatly improved my intonation in every position with fingerboard mapping and hand frame techniques. Next, I learned finger sets (combinations) that make playing fast passages so easy! And that's just the beginning. This book covers a full range of issues that most violinists find difficult. The techniques are explained in a simple, straightforward language that is easy to learn. What I really appreciated was the author's secrets on how to QUICKLY learn and retain tricky passages. This was so rewarding for me because I no longer show up to perform difficult music unprepared to play up to tempo! (That alone is worth the price of the book.) So if you are tired of doing it the "hard way", this book is for you. These "secrets" really work.

This is a great read. Whether waiting in a Queue or sitting in the loo, this book will make you laugh. It's full of fun observations one gains only from wearing the kilt regularly. If you wear the kilt you will recognize much of this book as being all too true. If you have never worn the kilt, perhaps it will provide insight and inspiration. - It's a great gift for the Kiltie in your life. Bettrer buy two. Once your friends have a glimpse, it will become a "rare book." (Any book loaned out which is returned to you is rare." -- Two Kilts Up.

By Amazon Customer Recently had the good fortune to win signed copies of Kevin Thompsons’ Kiltology volumes 1&2 and just received them in the mail about a week ago. As a fellow member of the kilted universe who wears a kilt on a semi-regular basis, I found myself identifying with Kevin’s many anecdotes about kilted life, laughing merrily along as I read both books cover to cover. Kevin’s humor and words of wisdom are a must for those who don a kilt. I HIGHLY recommend picking up copies today! - Rob Acox

Great coffee table book to get conversations going and perfect way to help explain "why we wear kilts". Every kilt wearer will find himself in at least one of the passages.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excelente !

A stirring and compelling story, full of adventure, set against the background of the move to freedom in Africa. In the face of opposition, hatred, violence and death, the gentler human feelings of friendship and love are nonetheless maintained. Joseph Mahoney is the last Colonial Commissioner in the Kariba Gorge, faced with easing the transition to new rule. To complicate matters, his servant Samson has been accused of murder, and he is drifting apart from Suzie, whom he loves very deeply. Yet personal matters apart, he must deal with the simmering undercurrent of violence and revenge that might envelope the countryside at any moment. The Author: John Gordon Davis was born in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, and educated in South Africa. He earned a BA in Political Science, paying his way through university by working as a deckhand on British merchant ships and on the Dutch whaling fleet at the Antarctic. He went on to take a Bachelor of Laws degree whilst serving as a judge´s clerk in Rhodesia. Called to the Bar, he was appointed an assistant public prosecutor in the Magistrate´s Courts during the troubled years leading up to Rhodesia´s Unilateral Declaration of Independence, before becoming Crown Counsel in the Attorney General´s Chambers. He was later appointed to the same position in Hong Kong. He quit this post to become a full-time writer when his first book, “Hold My Hand I´m Dying” became an instant best-seller. Other bestselling novels followed. A veteran seaman; he and his Australian born wife, Rosemary, sailed round most of the world in a succession of yachts. Upon retirement, they travelled widely and from their home in a lovely old Spanish farmhouse in Andalucia, Spain, he also ran highly successful writing courses for both aspiring and published authors. John Gordon Davis sadly died in 2014 leaving behind a rich literary heritage, including several unpublished novels he had worked on even as he supposedly slowed the pace.

It deals with life in Southern Rhodesia before and after independence from Britain. It's a very accurate, albeit fictional, account of the lifestyles of the 'white africans'. This is also a passionate and moving love story set in the turbulence of those unsettled times. I feel the author has accurately portrayed the ambivalence of white settlers in Africa - benevolent autocracy yet patronising towards the blacks and their aspirations. If I were to write a book, I hope I could convey the emotions of this book. Given the instabilty of the current black government in Zimbabwe and their attitude towards aids, civil rule of law, the author could quite easily say" I told you so!"

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There is a good variety of male and female humanoid characters By T-Russ I use these cards as representations of NPCs for D&D. There is a good variety of male and female humanoid characters. The backs of the cards feature names and some descriptions. Mostly, I put sticky notes with my own made-up attributes on the backs of them. The overall print of the packaging and cards is clean and bright. The packaging is thick and provides the right amount of protection for the cards. For the cards themselves, the cut is centered, and the price for variety is about right.I think I knew what I was getting into when I bought this deck--namely, what was in it and what was not. Yeah, I'd like to have more cards, but Pathfinder offers other interesting decks. At some point in the future, I'll probably invest in some of them just to add to the variety of people and monsters I can bring into the game. Initially, I thought I'd only play with a handful of these NPCs, but as I shuffle through the deck, I'm always coming up with new stories for the faces. So here's my only complaint: The cards feel the slightest bit lightweight. I might describe them as just slightly more bendable than a playing card or a card from a nice Euro board game. When you play a lot of games, you start to get a sense for these kinds of things. I suppose they start functioning like a minimum standard of quality. I would really have liked to have something a little more durable.Still, for what these cards have to offer, they're a great buy.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A yummy hamburger and fries of urban fantasy By Amazon Customer Before the Dawn is a story by Thom Brannan, author of the Pavlov's Dogs series. I was interested in this work automatically since any author who comes up with the idea of Zombies vs. Werewolves automatically gets my attention. Fair warning - I also know Thom Brannan personally from the writing community so you should take that fact into account when reading my work. I'll try and be fair and impartial so that I may drink up his tears and laugh at his shattered dreams. *pause* Oh, did I say that aloud? No, seriously, Before the Dawn is a pretty enjoyable urban fantasy monster hunter tale. The premise is monster hunter Io, who is a dude named after a Greek Cow Goddess, is a newly promoted agent of the Century. The Century is a group of one hundred wizards, each with a Roman numeral, who maintain the balance between the various supernatural forces in the world. They're remarkably unpretentious about this, being more interested in getting the job done than acting like the Dresden Files' White Council or even MI6. In this case, Io is summoned down from Seattle to Austin, TX due to a number of vampire related murders which is as close to a routine case as it gets in Io's line of work. Meeting with Detective John Chang and an ex-Century agent named Simon D'Argent, he discovers that there's a lot more going on in the city than he initially suspects. There's an ancient evil power, the mysterious Eastking, and a kooky water spirit who has her own method of water-boarding prisoners. Io is a laid back sort of protagonist who is probably too young to be in his profession. He's free from angst, aside from the mundane sort like his constant movements make dating a pain in the ass, which is a rarity in the genre. He's addicted to junk food, witty, and a relatively okay sort of fellow with few mental or social hangups. He's a bit on the vanilla side but he's not boring, either, which is a good thing. The supporting cast is also likable and entertaining but missing in extreme personalities. John is a Chinese American Texas police officer which, surprisingly, is played as almost irrelevant to his character. Aside from a few acknowledgements he really hates jokes on the subject, he's blessedly flee from stereotype. Simon D'Agent is basically Io in a hundred years, having seen it all and managed to somehow live through the experience. The villain is, sadly, the weakest part of the book due to being literally called the Master and just being sort of vaguely evil. He doesn't get much character development and exist, primarily, for our heroes to screw with his plans. I would have liked a bit more motivation and insight into what sort of creature it is as well as his intentions to the world. I was much more interested in the Eastking's agenda and, ironically, the Troll at the start of the book who just wanted to breed a new clutch of (horribly dangerous) babies. The best part of the book is, undoubtedly, the interrogation scene where Io is subjected to a variety of tortures both magical and mundane. This is when he feels genuinely in peril for the first time in the book as well as helpless before his captors. The insights we get back to his tortured childhood also give us some cracks in our lead's carefree armor. I would have liked to have seen more of those. Before the Dawn is a lighter and softer world than, say, the Dresden Files with the system of checks on the supernatural being implied to largely work. I'm not sure how the supernatual is supposed to be kept secret when every major city has a department liaison devoted to the spooky as well as the Century only having a hundred agents but it's not a complete suspension-of-disbelief breaker either. The book reads as less a single narrative and more like a series of miniature adventures which happen to tie together. Thom Brannan enjoys hanging around with his characters as they discuss pop culture, shoot-the-breeze, and explain what sort of creepie-crawlie they're dealing with this time. I did too, though I couldn't help but think I might have enjoyed the book more if it took more risks. In conclusion, Before the Dawn is like the Jack and the Box for which Io has sold his soul to indulge on daily. If you are hungry for urban fantasy, it is a tasty and delicious treat which is only bad for you if you eat nothing but it. This is the perfect "quick-read" for a person who just wants to enjoy some wise-cracking, likable heroes fighting nasty bad things.9/10

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read BEFORE Anything Else By Holly A. Zaldivar While reading Thom Brannan's BEFORE THE DAWN, I realized I'd found a necessary mantra to be repeated loudly and often -- I'm reading this BEFORE I wash the dishes; BEFORE I walk the dogs; BEFORE I pass out from exhaustion. And the list goes on. Thankfully for my house, my dogs, and my health I'm a fast reader. However, I'm a voracious reader, so I suspect this mantra will continue to be chanted. However, this novel will leave you laughing, cringing, terrified and trying desperately not to flip forward a few pages just to make sure everything turns out okay. Io, Centurion IX, mage and protector of Earth from supernatural enemies is mysterious, but entirely likable, in a quirky kind of way. Readers are constantly wondering about him -- is he human? an alien? supernatural himself? While these questions are interesting, Brannon only hints at bits and pieces of possible answers. Other characters are equally as fascinating, especially a retired Centurion, Simon.Brannan notes this is the first in a series of novels, and I can't wait to see where he takes Io in succeeding books. It's obvious Brannan is tapping into his own magical powers regarding his talent as an author. This is his best work yet, though I have truly loved everything else he's written. Do yourself a favor -- kick back with an excellent book and read BEFORE THE DAWN.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Brannan's books are now on the top of my TBR pile! By Brian L. Parker Brannan delivers another masterful work with Before the Dawn, the first book in his new paranormal detective series. Io, the white-haired Centurion IX, is a foul-mouthed, unorthodox, magic-wielding agent of the Century who is responsible for investigating violations of the Great Pact. He’s thrust into a centuries-old plot to infiltrate and conquer our dimension when the Century sends him to Austin, Texas to investigate a string of missing persons. With the help of John Chang, the Austin Police Department’s Century-liaison agent, he sets off on a whirlwind investigation leading all across the great state of Texas. Along the way, he faces vampires, water sprites and psychics capable of trapping a man within his own mind.If you liked Harry Dresden, then you’ll love Io!

The thinker level is a great challenge for me, and takes longer to solve. Start with the easier level and work your way up.

Evolved Publishing presents the first book in the new dystopian series "The Seekers," from the author of the multiple award-winning fantasy saga, "The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky." ~~~ "But what are we without dreams?" ~ A thousand years ago the Darkness came-a terrible time of violence, fear, and social collapse when technology ran rampant. But the vicars of the Temple of Light brought peace, ushering in an era of blessed simplicity. For ten centuries they have kept the madness at bay with "temple magic," and by eliminating forever the rush of progress that nearly caused the destruction of everything. ~ Childhood friends, Orah and Nathaniel, have always lived in the tiny village of Little Pond, longing for more from life but unwilling to challenge the rigid status quo. When their friend Thomas returns from the Temple after his "teaching"-the secret coming-of-age ritual that binds young men and women eternally to the Light-they barely recognize the broken and brooding young man the boy has become. Then when Orah is summoned as well, Nathaniel follows in a foolhardy attempt to save her. ~ In the prisons of Temple City, they discover a terrible secret that launches the three on a journey to find the forbidden keep, placing their lives in jeopardy, for a truth from the past awaits that threatens the foundation of the Temple. If they reveal that truth, they might once again release the potential of their people. ~ Yet they would also incur the Temple's wrath as it is written: "If there comes among you a prophet saying, 'Let us return to the darkness,' you shall stone him, because he has sought to thrust you away from the Light." ~~~ Be sure to read the second book in this series, The Stuff of Stars, due to release November 30, 2015. And don't miss David's award-winning speculative saga, "The Daughter of the Sea and the Sky."

The Children of Darkness, by David Litwack

Review "... a fantastic tale of a world that seeks a utopian existence, well ordered, safe and fair for everyone... also an adventure, a coming-of-age story of three young people as they become the seekers, travelers in search of a hidden treasure - in this case, a treasure of knowledge and answers... a tale of futuristic probabilities... on a par with Huxley's Brave New World." -- Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite "...a solid fantasy-dystopian offering, one that is not merely written by some author looking for a middling entry to the genre, but excellently crafted by an artist looking to make his mark... A timely novel beautiful in the simplicity of its writing and elegant in its underlying complexity."  -- Eduardo Aduna for Readers' Favorite "I found the world-building surrounding the people of the Ponds so descriptive that I was transported to their homes and way of life, and when the trio embarked on their journey, I could clearly picture them every step of the way. If you're looking for a classic fantasy quest wrapped in a fascinating, dark archaic world, then this novel will not disappoint you." -- K.C. Finn for Readers' Favorite

From the Author What if all you have been taught as good and right turns out to be the hand of darkness that has been holding you down? The Children of Darkness is about a society devoid of technology, the result of an overreaction to a distant past where progress had overtaken humanity and led to social collapse. The solution--an enforced return to a simpler time. But it's also a coming of age story, a tale of three friends and their loyalty to each other as they struggle to confront a world gone awry. Each searches for the courage to fight the limits imposed by their leaders, along the way discovering their unique talents and purpose in life.

Fun clean fantasy with some pieces missing By Alwaylslookingforagoodread The Children of Darkness is an original twist on the post-apocalyptic genre. Three youth are coming of age and instead of conforming to the current trends of the religious/political leaders they are thrust into an adventure that helps them grow into heroes and through their courage they help transform the way people think and the way politics function. What I think I like most about this book is that the teenagers are relatively normal. They don't face up to grown adults and beat them in hand-to-hand combat as is often the case with YA books. Instead they use their wits to solve puzzles and help make change.I liked this book and kept turning pages to see what would happen, but I also often found myself thinking the book was a little rushed, and tons of stuff happened. I think if the author took time to develop characters more and show the action instead of narrating it, this story could have been two very well rounded books. Now with the political situation basically resolved, I think a sequel will seem forced, or at least like it is an afterthought. Having said that I do like self-contained stories so in a way I'm glad I got good resolution. So the one-book-or-two-book thing doesn't really matter because the story was page-turning and fun.Having said that there are some things about this book that made me teeter between three and four stars:1. I felt there was very little intensity. Because of the rushed pace and narrated feel to the book, things that could have been intense were simply told in story form. Some scenes I would have loved to see played out were just not there. (like the sabotage of the vicar trees)2. The main characters didn't really need to struggle. When they needed food, it was given to them; when they needed shelter, they found it; when they tried to solve a thousand year old problem, the solutions came easily. They always seemed to solve the problems very quickly without any resistance, the whole time they were making some pretty big mistakes. I would have like to see them struggle and grow a little more.3. The foundation of the heroes' success is that there are some things that were lost over time, and just by reading a couple of postings of information people rose up in a peaceful rebellion against the government. What was on those pages? We are never told. If you develop a world and create a fallen political system, please give the details that will make all of this come together. I'm really confused why the writing on those pages was missing from the book. For these reasons I had to give this good book a 3 star rating. I also want to emphasize that, despite its flaws, I did enjoy reading this book. It was fun, fast paced and had a solid ending. I'd recommend it for those looking for a quick clean original YA book.I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

A message I hope all my students hear By Kathleen A Sullivan As a high school teacher and avid reader, I am constantly in search of books for my students as well as myself. David Litwack's The Children of Darkness is a perfect story for young adult readers, but its underlying theme and character development will keep any adult engaged. Nathaniel, Orah, and Thomas go on a journey to discover the keep, a rumored hidden treasure that many believe never existed or has been destroyed over time. Through their quest, the three main characters work to solve a riddle while meeting many strangers that provide them with more questions than answers. These questions, however, are the heart and soul of this book: How can just a few young people change the world? If all progress were stopped, would we look back to the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors? David Litwack writes the message I hope all of my students hear: "Ideas combined with courage can change the world."

A must read for lovers of dystopian fiction By Amiesbookreviews Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐* I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. This Dystopian fiction novel will captivate both Young Adult and Adult readers alike. David Litwack uses the story to examine how a theocracy works and how, over time, knowledge can be lost. He also examines the question of whether it is better to have free thought or whether safety and security is worth the loss of personal freedoms. This book will stay with the reader long after reading the final page. This is the first book in "The Seekers" series. The second book, "The Stuff of Stars" is due for release in November 2015. I hate that I have to wait a few more months to read it, but I am glad it is set to be released soon. This is a dystopian fiction epic set a thousand years in the future. Society is completely devoid of technology. Even simple things like maps have been banned and few people even know what the term means. The populace has returned to a simpler way of life. They refer to the time before as "The Darkness."Everyone lives by the rules of "The Temple of Light." The belief is that the Vicars and The Temple keep the Darkness from returning by using "temple magic."What is the truth? Well, you'll need to read THE CHILDREN OF DARKNESS to find out.Orah, Nathaniel and Thomas have all been friends since childhood. All three live in the tiny community of Little Pond. When Orah is sent to Temple City to receive a "teaching", Nathaniel decides to follow her and to attempt to save her from the horrors inflicted on those who receive "teachings."Placed in a prison cell while awaiting the Vicar's decision as to what fate will befall both Orah and Nathaniel, a secret is revealed to Nathaniel. A secret so explosive that it has the potential to change the world forevermore.Author David Litwack has created a world that is not only amazingly vivid, but is also written with stunning detail. He has created an entirely new religion and has shown through his fiction that human beings possess the capacity for both great good and great evil. The long ago past of this story sounds alarmingly like the reality of our current reality. He writes about wars being fought and atrocities committed in the name of religion. This brings to mind the current situation in the Middle East. There are many other similarities to modern times, but I will leave it to future readers to discover exactly what these are for themselves.THE CHILDREN OF DARKNESS may be a fictional tale, but it is also clearly a warning. It does not preach to the reader, in fact it allows the reader to experience each discovery at the same time as Orah, Nathaniel and Thomas."The Children of Darkness" is the first book in "The Seekers" series as I mentioned earlier in this review. This book could have been spread out to become two separate parts of the series, but I liked the fact that the author chose to include so much of the series into a single volume. This book is allowed to come to a proper stopping place. It still leaves the reader wanting to read the next book right away, but the reader does not feel like the story ends abruptly.I rate this book as 5 out of 5 stars and am very much looking forward to reading Book Two in "The Seekers" series.FAVORITE QUOTES:"... ideas combined with courage can change the world.""Which is the greater illusion - a life of contentment and peace, or the dream of a better world?"

What does it mean to say that human beings think politically, and what is distinctive about that kind of thinking? That question is all-too infrequently asked by political theorists, or is dealt with through generalizations, abstractions, and dichotomies. This study examines the actual, real-world patterns people display when thinking politically, identifying six features of political thinking. They include the role of making ultimate decisions and regulating all social affairs, ranking collective priorities, mobilizing support for groups or withholding it, conceptualizing social order and stability as well as disorder and instability, projecting future visions and constructing plans for a society, and engaging the power aspects embedded in language, by means of reason, rhetoric, emotion or menace. Concurrently the untidiness and occasional failures of thinking politically are acknowledged alongside its quest for neatness. A large number of case studies is employed, drawn both from professional political theorists and philosophers and from various instances of vernacular usage: politicians, political commentators, or protest groups. Both contemporary and historical evidence from different cultures is utilized in illustrating the theoretical framework of the book. This is the first systematic study of political thinking as a cluster of thought-practices, combining insights from political theory--traditional and recent--the study of language and discourse, and political science. This investigation of 'the political' as a mode of thinking challenges many conventional understandings of political thought in the current literature, teases out what is political--not philosophical or ethical--in political theory, and locates it as a complex and ubiquitous social practice present at all points of human interaction and at diverse levels of articulation.

The Political Theory of Political Thinking: The Anatomy of a Practice, by Michael Freeden

Review "This is undoubtedly one of the most unusual books written by a leading political theorist in the last few years. The core ambitions of this highly innovative work are to establish the significance of the innumerable thought-practices that figure within the complex patterns of everyday political thinking, and to ask why it is that these are routinely ignored or overlooked by political theorists. It is to the author's considerable credit that he makes his heterodox case in a carefully reasoned and intellectually sophisticated fashion." -Michael Kenny, Queen Mary University of London, Political Studies Review

"In a highly erudite and comprehensive manner, the prominent British political theorist Freeden (Univ. of Nottingham) raises fundamental questions about how students of politics and others engage in political thinking." -H. L. Cheek Jr., East Georgia State College, CHOICE

"Freedens tour of the terrain of political decision-making creates a rich context for common notions, such as Max Webers monopoly of legitimate force. Similarly Freeden provides a stimulating analysis of rights claims as conversation stoppers, in a subsection of chapter 4: Rights: The Ranking Device Par Excellence ... in shedding new light on how different conceptualizations of political concepts fit together in diverse overall approaches to thinking politically, Freeden makes a valuable contribution." -George Klosko, University of Virginia, The Review of Politics

"This volume is an important and welcome intervention in the conversations of political theory. Michael Freeden advances a dense, complex, and provocative theoretical argument as well as a research agenda, which deserve wide attention and critical discussion among both political theorists and political scientists ... It is unfortunate that most contemporary political theorists are not, by either inclination or training, prepared to undertake the kind of study that Freeden has both advocated and personified and to confront the issues that his work raises ... Freedens work makes a strong case for the claim that an important first step is to theoretically engage and study the kind of thinking that actually takes place in politics." -John G. Gunnell, European Journal of Political Theory

About the Author Michael Freeden is Professor of Political Theory at the University of Nottingham and Emeritus Professor of Politics, University of Oxford. His books include The New Liberalism: An Ideology of Social Reform (Oxford, 1978); Liberalism Divided: A Study in British Political Thought 1914-1939 (Oxford, 1986); Rights (Milton Keynes, 1991); Ideologies and Political Theory: A Conceptual Approach (Oxford, 1996); Ideology: A Very Short Introduction (Oxford, 2003); Liberal Languages: Ideological Imaginations and 20th Century Progressive Thought (Princeton, 2005); The Meaning of Ideology: Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives (ed.) (London, 2007). He is the founder-editor of the Journal of Political Ideologies. In 2012 he was awarded the Sir Isaiah Berlin Prize for Lifetime Contribution to Political Studies by the UK Political Studies Association.

Lee Cheek, Jr., Ph.D. In a highly erudite and comprehensive manner, the prominent British political theorist Michael Freeden (University of Nottingham) raises fundamental questions about how students of politics and others engage in political thinking. The author is concerned about the increasingly “slippery” language employed in political discourse, and while admitting that the meaning of political terminology is always undergoing change, there is nevertheless a need for decisiveness and finality to sustain the body politic (p. 74). Most importantly, Freeden urges a reorientation and renewed linguistic refinement among political theorists, suggesting that such a process would reinvigorate the how we think about politics. The complexities of the analysis in the work are necessary and do obfuscate from the author’s mission. For example, “micro” level studies of political language usually fail to provide “interpretative flexibilities” that facilitate broad level of understanding. Similarly, the goal of encouraging fluidity in political thinking may not always prove useful, suggesting an element of skepticism regarding relativism as a guiding principle for politics.H.
