Besides being an artist, he's also the co-author of Spiderwick Chronicles, something I didn't know before I bought this book. That's impressive.Realms: The Roleplaying Art of Tony DiTerlizzi is a 224-page hardcover that features more than 2 decades of art. You'll see the beautiful illustrations he created for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, Planescape, Magic: The Gathering as well as personal unpublished art.The artworks are fantasy themed, and most are character art. There are fully coloured illustrations as well as line art. DiTerlizzi has been compared to Arthur Rackham (who's also listed as an inspiration) a few times in this book and there are indeed similarities in their style. However, DiTerlizzi's work easily stands on their own with the imaginative characters and colouring. I like the earthy warm style present in the paintings and even the sketches, whether pen or pencil. There's also a pleasing caricature feel to the characters. The creature designs or the fantasy characters all look wonderful. All the artworks come with commentary from DiTerlizzi and those really provide the additional depth for the book. There are also text by other artists and colleagues such as Brom, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Gaiman, Iain McCaig, Donato Giancola and many more. This book is also available in Kindle format. But I recommend getting the hardcover because the hardcover so much bigger and you get to appreciate the artworks better. It definitely more satisfying with a hardcover copy.Highly recommended to fans and those who love fantasy art.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)

Reid I don't even know how many years ago now I found myself stuck in a comic shop with my husband once again looking for something to occupy my time. I'm an "in-and-out" kind of shopper - the husband is slooooow. He likes to look at and touch everything in the store. The downside of this for me is boredom; the upside is that I sometimes find stuff I would have missed. One day I wandered over to the gaming section. It had been years since I'd played AD&D, but I was intrigued by the concept of Planescape, which was more of a thinking setting than most games I had seen and much more inline with the independent campaign I was running. I picked it up, and therein I met the dynamic work of Tony DiTerlizzi.Wow. DiTerlizzi's art inspires me. His characters can be pretty exotic and strange, but something about them remains human and relateable to me. I could envision the world in which they'd live and painting in the details around them was simple. Even something as tired as a Beholder sprang to new life in his hands.I've paid attention to DiTerlizzi over the years, as I have done with the few other artists who have resonated with me, but was still surprised to discover on yet another slow crawl through a comic shop the existence of this retrospective. It's a stunning book, collecting a broad spectrum of DiTerlizzi's gaming art with interesting context for the work and the progress of his career. I'm delighted to have it and have it on prominent display in my house. It's a pleasure to pick up and rifle through it for me and for guests.Good stuff. I recommend.

Gorgeous, full of great art and insightful commentary from DiTerlizzi, friends and collaborators. The only downside to this book is that it isn't the first of a series looking at other gaming superstars, like Erol Otus.
