On a planet where magic and technology are inextricably intertwined, Tol, a gruff inner-city Goblin cop, finds himself in the unlikely role of savior when the world's access to The Slice, a reservoir of magical energy, is threatened by a fiendish criminal plot.

And life is only getting more complicated for Tol as the Chosen One, when his younger brother becomes king by defeating all comers in a network hacking contest, only to then staff his cabinet with the legendary and nefarious hacker, Boogla.

And not helping Tol in the least are the intrepid reporter Selpla and her crew as they battle their way to the uber story of the century, through magical superstorms, vicious wildlife, and a robot that grafts random animal parts onto wandering pets.

In Goblinopolis, Robert G. Ferrell has crafted an entirely new comedic world of magic, mayhem, and technocracy that devoted listeners of Terry Pratchett's Discworld will love and new fantasy listeners will devour and be left wanting more.

But after that, I found myself engaged with both his set of characters and his fantasy world, which he depicts vividly and consistently. I finished this book quickly, and discovered I wanted to read more. I hope Ferrell continues mining this rich vein of imagination.

By dan farmer This is one quirky book, a full-on blend of technology, magic, Tolkien, fantasy, and a whole lot of other wacky and fun stuff; the author's fervent imagination and obvious care for his created world and characters really shines through here. RGF is a real life spook working for the DoD, and I'd suspect Tol, the lead character in this book has more than a bit of himself in it. An impressive first novel, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

He is not a close friend, but I have know him for some years. I had heard that he was writing a novel, and when I saw Goblinopolis with his name attached, I had to check it out. When I saw that it was at a special price, it was a no brainer to grab it right away. As a friend, I would probably have bought a copy at the regular price anyway, especially when it is only $4, but it was even lower than that when I got it. I only worry that he cannot have made much off my purchase.Goblinopolis attempts to do several difficult things, and while it may have its problems, the fact that it succeeds as well as it does is a testament to the skill of the author.First, the protaganist is not human. That can be very hard to do. How do you make a sympathetic character out of someone the readers have nothing in common with. One way is to drop the character into a category that every reader will know. In this case, that category is tough street cop. Tol is like characters you know and love, from Sam Spade to Mickey Spillane. Throw in the funniest sidekick I have seen in years and you have a good start.Second, the story mixes technology and magic. This has been tried often, but not done well often. From my viewpoint, I see this as being a world of technology that also has magic. Tol, is not a magical type, but the case he is on is definitely magical in nature and I think this works very well.Third, this is a completely new world, and after an exciting chapter 1, the author must present us with a relatively lengthy exposition of the background of the world of N'plork and the kingdom of Tragacanth. I worry that some readers will get bogged down here, but if you will plow through it (it is not that bad), then the story continues to live up to the opening chapter. This is a fun read, and I highly recommend it.
