The steamy aftereffects of the late afternoon rain added to the solemn reason Beau Rivers found himself standing in the driveway of Lt. Dylan Akers…” The house “was the picture of happiness from the outside, but what waited inside was beyond terrible.” With these words, William Marks takes the reader on a journey of an incredible moral dilemma. A backstory around how these two men became best friends and the one incident that ruptured that friendship for ten years. Rivers is standing on this doorstep because the twelve-year old daughter of Akers had been kidnapped, raped, and her body dumped in a concrete ditch on an entrance ramp to Interstate-10. This was a child he had held from the time she came home from the hospital. He loved her like his own. Had even introduced Akers to his wife. A desperate Rivers made a critical mistake, which could have put him in prison, or at the very least, resulted in losing his ability to get any job in law enforcement. Instead, he lost his detective status and was put on patrol with no chance of going to a higher rank. Because his squad treated him like the scum he knew he was, and his heavy drinking left him with hangovers, he became sloppy in his work. Getting that first drink after work became his goal, particularly after a long and boring day. Even though assigned to traffic duty, robberies, and domestic calls, Rivers uses his time to find the perpetrators of the crime. He has kept his old contacts as an undercover cop working vice. He now connects with an old snitch who gives him a lead. Marks keeps the reader hooked chapter by chapter by chapter with twists and turns and unexpected reveals. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes police procedurals with heart. Marks takes his readers on a journey that puts the reader into the scene. This novel takes place in Tallahassee, Florida, and if you are familiar with the city, you will recognize the locations. There are several spots where the author has two points of view in a scene. I can overlook this since it is a first novel.

By KDP "Every so often you have to step from behind the blue line."Chapter seventeen of this riveting fictional book written by Tallahassee local author William Mark ends with these words. This is a book with a lot of action, but never the simplified television version of police work. For this reader, "From Behind the Blue Line" was a realistic, thoroughly absorbing read. The author provides an insightful and poignant view of the other side of the badge and allows you to feel as though you're right there during a tactical take down or an interview of a murderer. Mark's book addresses a lot more though than police work and crime solving. Alternating with chapters focused on the case and the complexity of the characters, readers will also discover heartache, friendship, loyalty, and atonement. If William Mark's expertise of law enforcement isn't enough, the characterization of brotherhood and humanity will be sure to keep you engaged. Highly recommend this book to everyone!

A real page turner By Charles Osterman William Mark is able to realistically describe the struggle of law enforcement officers in their quest to serve and protect. He captures the raw pain and emotion of two cops dealing with a brutal crime against one of the officer's daughter. His obvious law enforcement background enables him to give vivid details into criminal investigations. I found myself wanting to keep turning pages to find out what happens next...all the way until the final page.
