About the Author Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) is the creator of Tarzan, one of the most popular fictional characters of all time, and John Carter, hero of the Barsoom science fiction series. Burroughs was a prolific author, writing almost 70 books before his death in 1950, and was one of the first authors to popularize a character across multiple media, as he did with Tarzan s appearance in comic strips, movies, and merchandise. Residing in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941, Burroughs was drawn into the Second World War and became one of the oldest war correspondents at the time. Edgar Rice Burroughs s popularity continues to be memorialized through the community of Tarzana, California, which is named after the ranch he owned in the area, and through the Burrough crater on Mars, which was named in his honour.

35 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Bad publisher By Amazon Customer I'm sad to say this, but, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK! Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Burroughs fan and I love Tarzan, all of my issues with this book are with the binding and the editing. The book is WAY oversized, if it was hardback this might not be such an issue, but as a softcover it flops around and seriously detracts from the reading experience. For a $40 book the binding is horrible, the pages in my copy were not seated properly before gluing, it wasn't noticeable until I start reading, then the pages started falling out as I turned them. The editing is also very poor with no real spacing between the lines of text and no spacing between differing scenes causing a bit of confusion while reading. Overall I would suggest spending the extra money buying the books seperately, this collected edition is by far cheaper than purchasing the books individually, but the editing and the dimensions of the book would be enough to put most people off reading it.

Nayak This book deserves a review on 2 levels - 1st the quality of the writing and second the production/printingBurroughs is a master and you will find yourself engrossed and entertained by an absolutely original character for hours - just a marvelous read better than any of the new stuff out there yet does not feel datedthe book binding and size I thought were just fine. I bout it for 27$ at amazon and mine has held up well. Its just a great deal and if you dont beat up your books seems to be just fine. I like having all 8 books together in a massive tome - but maybe thats just me

I bought this book because it would be a wonderful memoir...or something. Major disappointment. The writing is still good. It's the story that's killing me. I'm halfway through and everybody has been killed. Tarzan's family, his friends, and so forth have been killed. I'm unable to continue reading because It's so difficult to deal with so much death and destruction. I'll have to, of course, because after a year or so of agony I have to learn what has happened. Great writing, as usual, but I'm too caught up in it.I'm 79 years old.. It's not supposed to have this kind of hold on me. Jeez!
