By AJ Avanaux: A Hickory Lace AdventureOverall impression: Original well thought out intriguing science fiction novel. I wanted to keep reading. The Author is clearly a student of history and has a firm grasp on the big picture, as evidenced by his realistic portrayal of the schizophrenic human condition. Medium paced in the beginning to fast paced at the end. The novel gave the bare details to move the action forward, which was helpful for people like my self with short attention spans. Many science fiction authors go on tangents describing the complexities of their worlds. Mr. McDermott has created a complex world but kept it simple. I would highly recommend it.Feel of the story: The main character Hickory Lace is a dynamic character with real issues, and faults she is not a ‘super woman’. Her relationship with her father and her deep conflictions about her job was a continuous underlying thread and helped shaped her motivations throughout the story. The characters in any story are the foundation and glue that moves a story forward. Why read if the characters bore you? All of the characters had their own agenda’s, wounds and motivations. I wanted to hear their story.Over all plot: I am not going to paraphrase the book. The plot was complex but presented itself in a way that did not bog me down and kept me engaged, again no easy feat. I have little patience. Geo politics on Earth is complicated enough. Now imagine another less advance world with its own politics, beliefs and regional biases. The chance for conflict is about as likely as a careless match causing a wildfire in California in July. The author again kept things simple and moved the action forward. Originally I was off put by the similarities between the aliens and humans, but then it dawned on me that it was quite appropriate. No matter what sun you live under the fact remains the same, all old things must fade away and give rise to new, not necessarily better, ideas.Why you should read: Will the Humans agenda completely destroy the alien’s way of life? Will the various factions in the alien’s world crumble and collapse into civil war under the threat? Will Hickory come to terms with here conflicted loyalties and fractured relationships? Who is this mysterious ‘messiah’ who inspires and divides the aliens?

Adding complexity to their task, the planet is one of the few in the universe that possesses sizeable deposits of an ore central to powering faster than light drives. Although their mission is of a religious nature, the team is drawn into secular power struggles between domestic political opponents fighting for domination of the planet and alien forces jockeying for control of the precious ore.This novel is very well edited. I found only a few typos and some comma issues. The writing in the first 15% of the book suffers from some roughness that makes it difficult to get into the book. However, if the reader perseveres past that point, the writing improves considerably.The background characters are rather two dimensional. The central characters are somewhat better drawn but never quite come to life. The story itself lacks the breadth to leap off the pages and into the reader's mind. "Avanaux" seemed as if it was on the verge of making it but never crossed over into the suspension of disbelief that is the hallmark of a well told story.I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is hard to recommend due to a variety of defects. On the other hand, there is some pretty good writing helped considerably by excellent editing. Some of the characters come close to engaging the reader. There were a few times when I had that feeling. You know. The one where you have to put down a good read and immediately feel compelled to pick it up again. It is just too bad that this did not happen more often with "Avanaux".

It is a rock em/sock em, roll up your sleeves, put on your sneakers adventure filled with intrigue, mystery, good guys, bad guys, demoralizing captures, narrow escapes, tense fights, and epic battles.Avanaux is the northern continent on the planet Prosperine where galactic forces have cast malevolent eyes on its crynidium deposits, needed for ftl travel. Hickory Lace and her two teammates, Gareth and Jess, drop into this cauldron to determine if a mystical figure's presence, who may or may not be the predicted Messiah, might stir unrest, foment rebellion, and threaten who controls crynidium mining. Stage set, the curtain is raised and the adventure begins.While the plot and characters break no new ground, you'll find yourself shaking a fist at their ill-advised risks, groaning at the contrivances needed to pull them out, rolling your eyes when they stumble into traps, then urge them to run faster when pursuers close the distance. Whatever the plot's weaknesses, the emotional involvement of a reader is the hallmark of a good storyteller.Finally, I commend the author for his courageous stance in including a character who Hickory, without ever becoming didactic or preachy, thinks might be a returned Jesus Christ. Too many writers play it safe, unwilling to compromise potential sales or step onto treacherous ground. Fiction is at its best when a novelist does not flinch at being provocative.With summer looming, Avanaux is a fun read perfect for the backyard hammock or a comfortable beach chair while on holiday.
