Peter Taylor is running out of time. To keep his parents happy, he’s on the verge of taking a six-figure consulting job with his father’s firm even though he loathes the idea of a business career. And he’s on the path toward marriage with his girlfriend Ashley even though it’s clear she’s with him for the money and not for love. If he starts the job or marries Ashley, his secret dream of being a writer--and the better life that goes with it--will be gone forever. Backed into a moment of no return at his college graduation dinner, Peter finally tells his parents he wants to write novels for a living. His announcement sets in motion a battle with his parents bigger and more far-reaching than anything he could have imagined, with unforeseen consequences and irreversible outcomes for everyone involved. Committed is a thought-provoking novel that reminds us that sometimes true love finds us in the most unlikely places, and is worth waiting for…and examines what it takes to have the courage to fight for our dreams, rather than just taking the path of least resistance. Committed is also filled with real-life information about writing and publishing for those that “have always wanted to write a book,” but like Peter, don’t have any idea of how to get started.

About the Author From an early age, Michael Griffith liked all things creative. Despite left-brain abilities, he loved right-brain pursuits like writing and illustrating his stories in junior high school, and singing and playing guitar in what would now be called a “classic rock” band. Pushed by college professors and by his wife (a former high school English teacher) to write, he promptly went to work in banking and trading on Wall Street. While that career was rewarding on several levels, he never lost the sense something was missing. Following a successful fight against a serious case of melanoma, and the untimely deaths of several extended family members and close friends, Michael decided to change. With no working DeLorean in sight and therefore, unable to transport back in time, he decided to drop everything and pick up where he’d left off with his dream of being a writer. Now his typical day involves beginning to write at about eight-thirty, making a run out for lunch near mid-day, and writing the rest of the afternoon. Nights are reserved for reading and research and going to sleep thinking about and looking forward to what he’ll be writing the next day. It’s all very hard work, though none of it feels like it is, except maybe the proofreading. And he couldn’t be happier.

The info is insightful, and Griffith has a way with words. I hear another one is planned ... will be interested to see where it goes. Griffith needs to get more confident and take some more chances, but a nice start and well worth the money.

By BellGirl6 I am not a writer, so I did not read Committed for the information about writing and self-publishing. I enjoyed this book for its human struggle about committing to a purpose and passion in life – whether that be writing, singing, teaching or anything else which with we particularly resonate. I found myself laughing out loud, captivated by boardroom battles and charmed by the imagery of the love story that unfolds throughout the book.To me, Peter represents that young, hopeful and perhaps naïve part of us that yearns to live out our passion; which in Peter’s case is writing. Yet, as with many of us, various parts of his ego try to syphon the creativity that fuels this passion. The story is filled with antagonists that rail against Peter’s innate desires. His father portrays a disapproving society that questions the validity of dreams and passion as passing fancies or pleasant side hobbies. Think about people’s usual reaction to anyone who claims that they want to make a living as an artist or an entrepreneur or anything else outside of a pre-ordained corporate box. They are usually not taken seriously or ridiculed as being naïve – destined for failure. This part of our ego - the conformist, risk adverse part – instinctively repells anything new. His father Robert represents the aspect of us that fears non-conformity and lack of structure as he focuses all of his energy into placing Peter in a gilded cage – the fancy office that he has built for his son.Other dimensions of our ego are represented in the consultants that are hired to argue against Peter in the guise of “helping him identify and avoid weaknesses in his writing business plan”. While the bullpen sessions serve as a great stage for Peter learning the pros and cons of traditional versus self-publishing, marketing strategies and a wealth of other critical information, the dialogue between Peter and his father’s consultants is a riveting ego battle. We experience the "bully" that challenges our self-belief and worthiness, asking “what makes you think that you can be a writer?” We sense the left brained accountant in us that rationalizes how difficult it will be to make a living as a writer. And we wrestle with that part of us that questions our preparedness, “after I learn more, draft a plan, earn more money, get a degree, lose weight, etc., then I’ll be ready”. Committed explores all of the reasons we derail ourselves and fail to commit our purpose and our passion. In the end, there is one part of us that is healthy; the part that says, “Stop putting so much energy into making excuses and just COMMIT! Even if you make mistakes, at least you committed to the process and are brave enough to see what happens!I received a complimentary review copy from the author.

Your story line was fascinating, riveting, exciting, suspenseful and page turning. A very creative way to tell readers about writing and publishing a book. Bull pens, love story and relationship with his Mother and Father were wonderful. I am going to pass it along to my family and friends to read. I cannot wait to read your second book, You’ll Be Home for Christmas, and would love a copy. I am very excited for you and know you will be a very successful writer!!
