12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Darren and Carl set the book off to a great pace and immediately fill our heads with as many ... By David S. In the Sixth Cycle Jake is in cryogenic sleep on the Endeavor Three one of the ships in his fleet. He awakens to find all his fellow crew’s pods open and the ship empty. Disoriented and confused about the lack of crew and his waking alone Jake slowly explores his ship for answers only to find everybody gone and the ship has been scavenged. He makes his way through the ship to the main doors and finds them open, having either landed or crashed he isn’t sure. Once outside he has more questions than answers and the confusion is ten fold. Jake has been asleep for 130 years and his ship has become an exhibit, he is a tourist attraction, the year is 2205, and the new world isn’t what it used to be.Darren and Carl set the book off to a great pace and immediately fill our heads with as many or more questions than Jake probably had. I was completed enthralled within two chapters and was pretty excited to read what had happened to the world Jake knew. He finds himself in the middle of a small town and is surprised when people are shouting and shooting at him. He escapes with his head spinning and tries to regroup in the nearby woods and figure out what is going on and where if any place is safe. The stage is well set for an adventure beyond Jake’s wildest dreams. The story has a great plot and attention to detail within the world the authors have built. There are many military details and socially filled themes that I found completely realistic possibility in a not too distant future. I love the characters as we see them react in this delicate new world. Jake learns that small groups of people are living in “strong holds” and there is a maximum to each groups population. Interesting idea for a society trying to rebuild after the end of the world. They all have a mayor and the entire group is kept in check by a man called “The Trader” who is more important than Jake knows.Jake comes across Skye who helps him when “wastelanders”, those who are affected by the remaining radiation from the nuclear war, have crossed his path in the forest. Skye is a great character and we see her grow up in a matter of days as she and all she knows is in danger. Major Finch from her “home stronghold” is a character I loved hating from the moment he is introduced. He gives you the feeling of disgust and he comes off as eccentric or maybe just plain crazy. I love authors who are able to create a character who can be despised right along with those we can get behind, all the while keeping them all believable. The characters all have a ‘real’ feel to them and the conversations and interactions all flow really well. The suspense during numerous fights and battles grips your attention and soon I had my favorite characters and a few I waited to see how they would develop. There are plenty of characters to love, hate and even feel sorry for in the Sixth Cycle. The story covers a few days in time and has plenty of action and story line to keep you guessing who is who, who are the good guys and where everyone stands. Skye is sent on a mission to kill an “outlaw” that is giving the citizens around her home trouble. Soon Skye realizes the man Ryder she is sent to kill isn’t the enemy but an Allie she can count on. Shortly after finding Ryder there is a brutal attack from the wastelanders and I really liked the battle scene in the caves. Plenty of nail-biting action and bloodshed, along with slim hopes everyone won’t be slaughtered. The final battle I leave you to read for yourself, but I can say Karma is a wonderful thing and I was glad to see Darren and Carl use it to wrap up the story. The storytelling was well done and clever, I didn’t see many of the unknowns until the authors meant me too. As the book comes to its climax and the answers start to become apparent I was pleasantly surprised and was really glad to see how it all wrapped up. I would have liked another chapter or two to explain further back story but in the end Jake aligns himself with the right people and eventually comes to understand his place in his new world and how he will move on. Again I am not disappointed with Darren Wearmouth, he tells a well written story and his co-author Carl Sinclair is now an author I will be reading.

Part science fiction, apocalyptic, dystopian and war like reading. It grabs you from page one and never lets go. So much action and the characters speak to you, even outside of what the author has written. The characters feel real to the reader and will drag you into the story with you. BUY this now and take some time and savor the story. Truly a fantastic read. Have fun fellow readers.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Read By NS The other day I was reading an article about what makes a good post-apocalyptic story. The author argued that what sets a good story from a great story isn't necessarily the threat or the apocalyptic event in the story, but rather how the characters react to that event. This is exactly what makes Sixth Cycle a five star book. In Sixth Cycle we have a post-apocalyptic world that's been mostly destroyed by nuclear war. Humanity is hanging on by a thread in small medieval strongholds. What makes the story really interesting is how Captain Jake Phillips adapts to this world in order to survive, and how Skye, a tracker, deals with the discovery that could end this fragile world.Sixth Cycle is a gritty fun read that kept me turning the pages. Highly recommended.

What a change from the Arizona desert The words broke from the lips of Ken Ward as he leaned from the window of the train which was bearing his brother and himself over the plateau to Tampico in Tamaulipas, the southeastern state of Mexico. He had caught sight of a river leaping out between heavily wooded slopes and plunging down in the most beautiful waterfall he had ever seen. Ken Ward in the Jungle, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

Not typical Grey By A Customer Although this book is not the typical Grey Western/Pioneer novel, it carries many of the charactics that earmark it as a genuine Grey. The adventerous Ken Ward, his rambumctious brother Hal, and few new characters guide you on an exciting journey through the jungle. Grey, as usual, decribes the jungle in a manner such as to make one think they are there. Although off the beaten Grey path, this book will be pleasurable for the Grey fan, or any other reader.

Down a Jungle River By Charles Wheeler Ken Ward in the Jungle is a fictionalized re-telling of an adventure Zane Grey experienced for himself in Mexico in 1910 as he searched for the source of the Santa Rosa River whose origin was unknown. He and his companions encountered wild boar, 10 foot long snakes, jaguars, and innumerable bugs the likes of which they had never seen which bit and stung and caused fevers and chills. This was probably the most difficult journey Zane Grey ever undertook of all the treks he made around the world. The river was a raging torrent besides being interlaced with numerous waterfalls and rapids, many of which they had to portage around through dense tropical jungle. Years later Zane Grey would write about it in fuller detail in a story entitled Down a Jungle River in one of his fishing/adventure books, Tales of Southern Rivers. This was the 4th Ken Ward book in the series. These were the first books that Harper and Brothers published of Zane Grey's and began the career of the most successful financially writer of the twentieth century.

With an Introduction and Notes by Peter Merchant. Canterbury Christ Church College. The tough-mindedness of the social satire in and its air of palpable integrity give this novel a special place in Anthony Trollope's Literary career. Trollope paints a picture as panoramic as his title promises, of the life of 1870s London, the loves of those drawn to and through the city, and the career of Augustus Melmotte. Melmotte is one of the Victorian novel's greatest and strangest creations, and is an achievement undimmed by the passage of time. Trollope's 'Now' might, in the twenty-first century, look like some distant disenchanted 'Then', but this is still the yesterday which we must understand in order to make proper sense of our today.

The Way We Live Now (Illustrated), by Anthony Trollope

Amazon.com Review Trollope's 1875 tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business, and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover (for whom she steals funds in order to elope) is a classic in the literature of money and a ripping good read as well.

Review "The Way We Live Now is the essence of Trollope. If he had written no other novel, it would have ensured his immortality."

From the Inside Flap 'Trollope did not write for posterity, ' observed Henry James. 'He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket.' Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, "The Way We Live Now is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and a bold indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. 'I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age, ' Trollope said. His story concerns Augustus Melmotte, a French swindler and scoundrel, and his daughter, to whom Felix Carbury, adored son of the authoress Lady Carbury, is induced to propose marriage for the sake of securing a fortune. Trollope knew well the difficulties of dealing with editors, publishers, reviewers, and the public; his portrait of Lady Carbury, impetuous, unprincipled, and unswervingly devoted to her own self-promotion, is one of his finest satirical achievements. His picture of late-nineteenth-century England is a portrait of a society on the verge of moral bankruptcy. In "The Way We Live Now Trollope combines his talents as a portraitist and his skills as a storyteller to give us life as it was lived more than a hundred years ago.

I consider it to be a tragedy that Anthony Trollope's works are largely forgotten and overlooked by the reading public. So many well-educated people have never even heard ot him, although his novels are some of the best representatives of what a good novel should be! His beautiful storytelling in "The Way We Live Now" is just another example of Trollope at his best. A master raconteur, his vivid descriptions and cutting satire make this work one of his most controversial (at least at the time) and indeed one of his most respected. Though his longest work, it certainly does not seem long because he keeps the reader on his toes, so much so, that he is dying to know what will happen next. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is the fact that it is difficult to find a character whom you can like. Each one, and there are many, has one or more particular faults, and we, as the readers, quickly realize that no one is perfect. Even the sympathetic characters are prejudiced at times. This, I believe, is a marked contrast to Dickensian personnages who much of the time are almost too angelic or cruel to be believable. Trollope give us a lesson in true human nature, one that will be very hard for me to forget.

44 of 44 people found the following review helpful. "You need a special kind of man who understands the way we live now to lead you into that new world of peace and prosperity." By Mary Whipple Often considered Trollope's greatest novel, this satire of British life, written in 1875, leaves no aspect of society unexamined. Through his large cast of characters, who represent many levels of society, Trollope examines the hypocrisies of class, at the same time that he often develops sympathy for these characters who are sometimes caught in crises not of their own making. Filling the novel with realistic details and providing vivid pictures of the various settings in which the characters find themselves, Trollope also creates a series of exceptionally vibrant characters who give life to this long and sometimes cynical portrait of those who move the country.Lady Carbury, her innocent daughter Henrietta (Hetta), and her attractive but irresponsible son Felix are the family around which much of the action rotates. They are always in need of money and Lady Carbury writes pap novels to support the family (and Felix's drinking and gambling). In contrast to the Carburys, and just as important to the plot, are the Melmottes. Augustus Melmotte, who has come from Vienna under a cloud of financial suspicions, has acquired a huge estate for himself, his foreign wife, and his marriageable daughter. Boorish, but determined to become a leader of society, Melmotte provides moments of humor for the reader, though he is scorned by an aristocracy which is nevertheless beholden to him for his investments. When Paul Montague, a young businessman who has invested in a railroad in America, arrives in town, he finds himself in love with Hetta--and in competition with Roger Carbury for her hand. Felix courts the Melmottes' daughter for her fortune, and she falls in love with him while he dallies with a local domestic worker.Often addressing the reader directly, Trollope fills the novel with action and subplots which illustrate a wide variety of themes, often depicting his characters satirically to illustrate the social, political, and financial ills of the day. Ahead of his time for his depiction of the lively, intelligent woman whose role is defined (and limited) by her social and financial position, Trollope creates a number of resourceful women--and a number who are willing to do almost anything to marry a wealthy man. As is customary in Victorian novels, the good are rewarded here, and the evil are punished, but Trollope's characters, unlike those by Dickens, for example, usually control their own destinies. Broad in scope, thoughtful in construction, complete in its depiction of 1870s' England, filled with wonderful characters, and absolutely engrossing to read, The Way We Live Now is one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. It concerns greed, pursuit of position, and fraud in late 19th century London, but most of the story line reads as if it could have been set in 2008, during the financial scandals on Wall Street. There is even a Bernard Madoff type figure in the story. There is also a BBC/PBS adaptation available on DVD. It is also excellent, but necessarily lacks some of the richness of detail that we find in the book. I don't think of Tollope's books as page turners, but I got to a point where I didn't want to put this down. Perhaps in a few years the material won't seem as fresh, but right now it's very timely.

FAME Publishing first opened in 1959 and produced hits for great musicians like Etta James, Clarence Carter and Aretha Franklin. Not long after, the city of Muscle Shoals became known as the "Hit Recording Capital of the World." FAME was the foundation that produced Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, the Nutthouse and Sundrop Sound at Single Lock Records--studios that gave a voice to artists like Drive-By Truckers, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit and John Paul White. A new generation, including the Pollies and Doc Dailey & the Magnolia Devil, today carries the tradition of great music. Through extensive research, and enriched with interviews from those who lived it, local author Blake Ells chronicles the epic story that started with FAME.

This is almost like a sequel, showing you that the area will continue to turn out great music for years to come.Blake Ells was absolutely the right person to write this book. He knows the area; he loves the area. I can't think of anyone that would have given the area, the music, and the people the respect they deserve more than him.

Former Navy Seal Jake Javolyn, a dive boat operator by profession and part-time smuggler by necessity, has come to Haiti to fulfill a solemn promise made to a comrade-in-arms killed in the mountains of Tora Bora. Hiring his boat out to a renowned marine zoologist, he sets course for Navassa Island only to stumble across a beautiful girl in the open sea. Encircled by a pod of six white dolphins, the girl is found riding a seventh much larger but similar creature. Javolyn quickly discovers the girl has extraordinary powers, and her companions are unlike any sea mammals he has ever encountered. Shortly thereafter, they lead him to a hidden cove teeming with life where fantastic riches abound beneath calm waters, upon which he is plunged into a world of the supernatural and confrontation with iniquitous forces bent on vengeance and the capture of nature’s most recent miracles. Evil has asserted itself in the form of a most unlikely alliance, one which Javolyn finds himself pitted against. A sadistic colonel seeks to take control of Haiti by forging an unholy partnership with a vicious drug ring and Islamic terrorists. In a race against time, Javolyn and the girl must stop an insidious plot aimed at obtaining a catastrophic weapon lying in the ocean depths near Navassa Island. The Girl Who Rode Dolphins is a one of a kind nail-biting adventure that will leave readers spellbound and enthralled with its superb mix of intense action and mysticism.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Great Backdrop For An Ongoing Saga By XtraSkeptic This volume is stimulating in many ways. From Javolyn's honor and heroism, to the tender-caring, righteous, and naive nature of Destiny each character is carefully honed in each chapter. A multitude of sub-plots visited and re-visited until they are fully developed and merging into the climactic end at the last chapter. Full of military, scuba, engineering, technical gadgetry jargon to expand the mind of the uninformed and make those in such fields feel at home. It is a story of good verses evil with many action sequences and close calls reminisce of agent 007. It has a little of everything (action, romance, andventure, geography, history, etc. too much to list). At 711pgs completing the read is an accomplishment. However, the saga proves to be rewarding in the end. I hope Mr. Ganas will continue the work of the dolphins in developing their colony by supplementing what seems to be a base volume with shorter follow-up volumes to keep us abreast of how these intelligent creatures fair in their desire to change the hearts of a multitude no man can number.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A truly wonderful adventure of a book. By S.T. Cartledge I feel good about this book.Let me tell you why:How often do you read a book that's so dramatic or emotionally investing or bleak in the way that it builds suspense or in the way the narrative tension plays out and you're not sure if the author will reward you with an emotional payoff at the end? Even if they do, it's probably taken a lot out of you to read their book in the first place. That's the stuff of great fiction, after all. I get why people write that way and I get why people like reading those books. The Book of Adventures is the exact opposite of that. This book is brimming with positive reinforcement, teamwork, friendship, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil at all times. At no point do I feel overly afraid or concerned about the characters or the situations they find themselves in because there is always that beacon of hope wrapped in a blanket of comfort. So why is this book so great? It's not just a feel good snoozefest, because who likes stories with no conflict and no legitimate threat? It is what the book title promises: a book of adventures. Told as a script, in all dialogue, no scene setting, we are drawn into the world through the conversation between the members of the Bouthiette gang. Time stretches and compresses to fit the dialogue, and in this way, the story really emerges as this strange, abstract thing. You can see it taking place inside the author's head, a series of conversations bouncing back and forth in an empty room.In that sense it's like the kind of magic I felt while watching Inside Out. Each character has a specific personality and skillset which enhances our understanding and emotional attachment to the main character, Gregory. It's like we get to see inside his mind and feel the excitement and adventure, as well as the fear of things like snakes and spiders, heights, failure, and losing touch with his friends. It is in this strange place where the Book of Adventures becomes more than a fun adventure book of collecting things and accomplishing goals. It becomes a personal adventure, the growth that comes with overcoming fears and having trust in your friends and knowing they have trust in you.It feels good to read something like this, which is so spectacular and imaginative, and told in such a spectacular, imaginative way, that you can read it all and feel good about yourself and feel good about the world and not feel like every little thing is dragging you down. It's a wonderful reminder that great things can happen if you're willing to go on that adventure.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It's a great read, buddy. By thewordvirus The Book of Adventures is a one-of-a-kind odyssey into a bizarre, weirdly upbeat world that is not without its dangers. While reading through this epic book, I found myself constantly smiling. The characters are so likable and simple which is a nice contrast to the kind of stuff I usually read. The closest I can explain my fondness for this book: do you remember how you felt as a child when you watched cartoons? For me, Saturday morning cartoons brought along a feeling of incredible joy, escape, and comfort. The nostalgia I feel from cartoons I watched a child is present here, in this book, even though it is new to me. It also brings the nostalgia and happiness of platforming video-games, of which it takes inspiration. And the form itself is unique. It reads like a play without stage directions--characters speaking dialog, with all action implied or referred to in their words. The repetitive nature of The Book of Adventures actually gives it its own sense of rhythm and momentum. There's just nothing else like it. Gregory Bouthiette's writing style is completely his own. I look forward to his future projects.
