Cartledge I feel good about this book.Let me tell you why:How often do you read a book that's so dramatic or emotionally investing or bleak in the way that it builds suspense or in the way the narrative tension plays out and you're not sure if the author will reward you with an emotional payoff at the end? Even if they do, it's probably taken a lot out of you to read their book in the first place. That's the stuff of great fiction, after all. I get why people write that way and I get why people like reading those books. The Book of Adventures is the exact opposite of that. This book is brimming with positive reinforcement, teamwork, friendship, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil at all times. At no point do I feel overly afraid or concerned about the characters or the situations they find themselves in because there is always that beacon of hope wrapped in a blanket of comfort. So why is this book so great? It's not just a feel good snoozefest, because who likes stories with no conflict and no legitimate threat? It is what the book title promises: a book of adventures. Told as a script, in all dialogue, no scene setting, we are drawn into the world through the conversation between the members of the Bouthiette gang. Time stretches and compresses to fit the dialogue, and in this way, the story really emerges as this strange, abstract thing. You can see it taking place inside the author's head, a series of conversations bouncing back and forth in an empty room.In that sense it's like the kind of magic I felt while watching Inside Out. Each character has a specific personality and skillset which enhances our understanding and emotional attachment to the main character, Gregory. It's like we get to see inside his mind and feel the excitement and adventure, as well as the fear of things like snakes and spiders, heights, failure, and losing touch with his friends. It is in this strange place where the Book of Adventures becomes more than a fun adventure book of collecting things and accomplishing goals. It becomes a personal adventure, the growth that comes with overcoming fears and having trust in your friends and knowing they have trust in you.It feels good to read something like this, which is so spectacular and imaginative, and told in such a spectacular, imaginative way, that you can read it all and feel good about yourself and feel good about the world and not feel like every little thing is dragging you down. It's a wonderful reminder that great things can happen if you're willing to go on that adventure.

By thewordvirus The Book of Adventures is a one-of-a-kind odyssey into a bizarre, weirdly upbeat world that is not without its dangers. While reading through this epic book, I found myself constantly smiling. The characters are so likable and simple which is a nice contrast to the kind of stuff I usually read. The closest I can explain my fondness for this book: do you remember how you felt as a child when you watched cartoons? For me, Saturday morning cartoons brought along a feeling of incredible joy, escape, and comfort. The nostalgia I feel from cartoons I watched a child is present here, in this book, even though it is new to me. It also brings the nostalgia and happiness of platforming video-games, of which it takes inspiration. And the form itself is unique. It reads like a play without stage directions--characters speaking dialog, with all action implied or referred to in their words. The repetitive nature of The Book of Adventures actually gives it its own sense of rhythm and momentum. There's just nothing else like it. Gregory Bouthiette's writing style is completely his own. I look forward to his future projects.
