What a change from the Arizona desert The words broke from the lips of Ken Ward as he leaned from the window of the train which was bearing his brother and himself over the plateau to Tampico in Tamaulipas, the southeastern state of Mexico. He had caught sight of a river leaping out between heavily wooded slopes and plunging down in the most beautiful waterfall he had ever seen. Ken Ward in the Jungle, by Zane Grey

About the Author American author (Pearl Zane Grey) is best known as a pioneer of the Western literary genre, which idealized the Western frontier and the men and women who settled the region. Following in his father s footsteps, Grey studied dentistry while on a baseball scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania. Grey s athletic talent led to a short career in the American minor league before he established his dentistry practice. As an outlet to the tedium of dentistry, Grey turned to writing, and finally abandoned his dental practice to write full time. Over the course of his career Grey penned more than ninety books, including the best-selling Riders of the Purple Sage. Many of Grey s novels were adapted for film and television. He died in 1939.

Not typical Grey By A Customer Although this book is not the typical Grey Western/Pioneer novel, it carries many of the charactics that earmark it as a genuine Grey. The adventerous Ken Ward, his rambumctious brother Hal, and few new characters guide you on an exciting journey through the jungle. Grey, as usual, decribes the jungle in a manner such as to make one think they are there. Although off the beaten Grey path, this book will be pleasurable for the Grey fan, or any other reader.

Down a Jungle River By Charles Wheeler Ken Ward in the Jungle is a fictionalized re-telling of an adventure Zane Grey experienced for himself in Mexico in 1910 as he searched for the source of the Santa Rosa River whose origin was unknown. He and his companions encountered wild boar, 10 foot long snakes, jaguars, and innumerable bugs the likes of which they had never seen which bit and stung and caused fevers and chills. This was probably the most difficult journey Zane Grey ever undertook of all the treks he made around the world. The river was a raging torrent besides being interlaced with numerous waterfalls and rapids, many of which they had to portage around through dense tropical jungle. Years later Zane Grey would write about it in fuller detail in a story entitled Down a Jungle River in one of his fishing/adventure books, Tales of Southern Rivers. This was the 4th Ken Ward book in the series. These were the first books that Harper and Brothers published of Zane Grey's and began the career of the most successful financially writer of the twentieth century.
