The only official history of The Who—created with the full cooperation of Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, and spectacularly illustrated with rare photographs and memorabilia—published in conjunction with the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the band's first album, My Generation, and their celebratory world tour.

Three legendary bands are revered as the holy trinity of modern rock and roll: The Beatles. The Rolling Stones. The Who. This landmark publication is the first official history of The Who featuring exclusive access to never-before-published images and memorabilia from the band's own archive, and from other sources including collectors and fans.

Blending memoir, history, and music, The Who explores the influences that shaped the band and its members, from Britain’s post-war austerity to Elvis, Lonnie Donegan, and American youth counter-culture. It follows them through the Mod and Pop years and the furiously fast sixties, and charts the hit singles—"My Generation," "I’m a Boy,, "The Kids Are Alright," and "Pinball Wizard." It revels in memories of making it big in America and inspiring Jimi Hendrix to set his guitar on fire, and much more.

It records the band’s highs—their groundbreaking artistic achievements of Tommy and Quadrophenia—and the devastating lows—the loss of Keith Moon and John Entwistle. The Who documents the extraordinary story of how a tax inspector, sheet metal worker, art school stoner and maverick drummer—John Entwistle, Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and Keith Moon—became one of the most famous and enduring musical acts of modern times and transformed the world, creating the sound of a generation.

The Who includes approximately 500 color and black-and-white photos, band and fan memorabilia, and archive material; Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey are writing the captions, providing an extra layer to the book; and there is a special pullout feature spreads providing vivid background social history and context.

BEAUTIFUL WHO BOOK THAT COVERS A BIT MORE THEN 50 YEARS, A MUST OWN FOR A DIE HARD FAN By Edward J. mccarthy Jr. i have been a who fan now since 1978 and i have many other books and reads on the who so there is not to much information regarding recordings and unreleased stuff in this book that you dont already know about as that has all been mentioned in other books especially the faq book that came out last year, anyway THIS BOOK IS BEAUTIFUL, its a beautiful hard cover coffee table style book with loads of photos from the band members childhood all the way up to present day, there are many personal stories here and this is a very very well done book, there are alternative who shots from photo sessions i have never seen before and basically the book starts out way back when the guys where young elvis fans in the 50s and takes us up to today, there is so much to read here and the front cover of the hardcover book in englossed with the mod target who logo on very thick cardboard, i can go on and on about this book but if you are thinking of getting this i would act quick as amazon has this for the best price as it retails for 50 bucks in a bookshop, you can never tell how long first edition hardcover books will last and once again THIS IS BEAUTIFUL i know i cant stop- saying that but that is what this book is to a who guy of 37 years now as i have an ample who collection......

It's discussion of post-WW2 London, from the bomb shelters to the Teddy Boys is fascinating. The photos are great, and the hardcover raised Who logo is beautiful. As a Who follower, and devotee since the early '70s, I found myself learning new Who, and also reliving great memories. Excellent!

Not only is it a wonderful book with back stories, childhood photos and great professional shots. but there are two pages of MY photos! I feel very honored. The book I have is the British edition sent to me by the publisher. The price is more that worth it. It is £30 in England. This is a great coffee table book for Baby Boomers and others. (No I did not get paid nor do I make any money from the sales. I had 7 photos in the tour book, so you might recognize some from there.)Once you start looking through it, you can't put it down! Page after page of really great stuff. They have done themselves proud with this one. This really is OUR G-g-g-generation!
