Wonderful detailed companion to the animated TV series By Parka [[VIDEOID:869f0229d949e1318cecdbd7326eb0e8]]Even though the original Evangelion series is more than 2 decades old this year, the anime's popularity just does not die down. I guess a bit has to do with the reboot series Rebuild of Evangelion. I enjoy them all, the TV series, films, everything. I'm a fan, and this book is made for fans of the original TV series.This book covers the first 13 episodes of the TV anime series.The Essential Evangelion Chronicle: Side A is a large 128-page paperback published by Udon Entertainment. This is an in-depth companion that features character profiles, episode breakdowns and beautiful art.The character profiles includes the analysis of each character's personalities, motivation and history. For those who followed, the series, it's a good refresher and also elaborates of the relationships between the characters. This includes the 3 Eva pilots Shinji, Rei and Asuka, the staff in the control room, Shinji's classmate, and even Misato's pet Pen Pen, etc.The episode breakdown has the summary, explanation of what happened, sequential screen stills and even information such as the tanks, trucks and weapons that appear in the anime. There's caption for everything, from the pods that go into the EVAs to what kind of breathable liquid that's inside.The last few pages feature some of the merchandise, such as the DVDs and figurines, that came out over the last few years.This book is no different from an encyclopedia essentially. It's informative and insightful.One thing that surprised me is how well the art from the anime is reproduced. The anime is more than 20 years ago and it seems that this book has used the higher resolution screen stills. Everything appears sharp and nice.This is a wonderful companion. By Jim Pyke Several years ago at an anime convention I picked up a somewhat mysterious (because I don't read Japanese) item. It turned out to be issue six of a serialized magazine about Evangelion. One small piece of a kind of serialized "show bible" for Evangelion.Very (Japanese) text heavy, and thus impossible for me to get a lot of value from. I will upload a pic of it on the product page here if I can.I learned that the full run of this "magazine" was organized, both in terms of its content and even in its physical production, to be removed from its binding once the entire sequence had been issued, and reorganized into a large three ring binder. Gotta love the way the Japanese pay such attention to detail in the anime goods they produce. They sure know their market of nit-picky, information-hungry perfectionists.I think in all there was close to 1000 pages of material in the original serialized version, and for a few years already the http://www.amazon.com/Evangelion-Chronicle-Illustrations-Weve-Inc/dp/1926778553/ book has been out. It collects, as the name implies, many Eva illustration materials, but for a hardcore collector of Eva artbooks, that volume didn't necessarily offer much new. And it was very light on text.Well, flash forward to now and this somewhat thin, but quite heavy full color volume emerges. It's the first of two planned volumes that reorganize and *translate* the vast majority of what I understand was contained in the original serialized version.I did some side-by-side comparison with that one issue of the original magazine that I own, and it looks like they worked very hard to restructure the layouts in order to pack in as much of the original information as possible. And best of all: it's now in English!Nice 20th anniversary gift for English speaking Eva fans.One last point of awesomeness that might seem minor for some is that the episode titles in this book are actually translated from the original Japanese, rather than simply using the retitlings that were assigned for the English language release of the series. This is a huge deal for those of us who wish to study and enjoy this landmark anime series with as much of its cultural specificity kept intact in translation.Do not hesitate to buy this! This book will help clear the way, however, offering insights not spoken on the series, helping to explain details of the events from 2000-2015 in the show, and even providing specific battle data for fights with Angels.This is an incredible guide to have with you while you're watching the series as a novice or multiple viewer.
