From the foil-like background on the cover to all that's within, you can tell a lot of thought and care was put into it.It includes a Foreward by Jayson Thiessen, explaining the general mindset of how the team at DHX goes about designing the show and an interview with Lauren Faust. While I don't believe the interview contains any new information, it was a fun read nonetheless. It does, however, have a lot of concept art from when she was figuring out what to do with the show. The ones I enjoyed the most had scribbles of notes next to them. One of my personal favorites were doodles of visual images related to magic (presumably for Twilight's cutie mark) where it lists and shows things like a wizard's hat, stars and moon, black cat, then a pentagram (sans circle) with the note under it reading "(yeah right)". Another is various sketches of Applejack, with a note from Lauren between: "I can't draw cowboy hats. :("There's a mountain of beautiful layout art for backgrounds, color studies, storyboard art, and concept sketches; most often broken down into specific characters and setting. There's even a few specific episodes showing breakdown between what had been storyboarded and the final scene. Mixed in are comments from Jayson Thiessen, "Big" Jim Miller, Rebecca Dart, and other Hasbro and DHX senior staff.Often art books, especially for ongoing series, only contain content from early seasons, but this book contains art and characters as recent as episode 14 of season 5. Prince Rutherford of Yakyakistan even has his own small section, where you finally can get a good look at his eyes.At the end, there is a small interview from Matt Mattus discussing the fandom and the impact on the show it's had, followed by a message from WeLoveFine and examples of the fan art now seen on t-shirts and other products. It is an excellent book that is as in-depth (sometimes even more so) than any of the Disney or Pixar "art of" books I own. The only nit-pick I have is that, while credited in a list at the end of the book, I really wish they would have credited the artists exactly where their work shows up. The fan art is individually credited, so I am not quite sure why they couldn't have done so for the DHX artists.Any fan of the show or even animation fan in general that has interest in what goes on in the concept and design process will love this book!

This book is a treasure chest of storyboards, sketches, character info and more. I do wish we got more of a look of the early design of the mane 6 and how they compare to their original counterparts. Applejack showed a picture of her original toy from 1983 but she was the only one. I know the photos are out there of Lauren's original ideas next to the 1983 versions. Wish it had been included. And I would have loved to see larger images and more info on Princess Luna. Her original sketches look amazing and I wish I could have looked at more. A someone with an interest in drawing, larger images would have been nicer so I could study the drawing lines. However, those are minor quibbles.I've collected many a book from Disney covering the same topics. Their books are bigger and more detailed but since this is perceived as a kids show, I'm grateful we even got this. The Disney books are also double the price of this but they do give you larger looks at sketches.Overall you can't go wrong with this book. As a fan I'm just left with wanting more than what they give us.

By Ariyen Just got this book in the mail from the company Abrams as being one of the winners in a giveaway. My daughter and I enjoyed the book very thoroughly. It was incredible to see how they had drawn the ponies as well as the backgrounds. My daughter has an interest in drawing and so I think this helped get her an idea of animation drawings before any color. I grew up with the ponies from the 80s version onward and I'm proud to pass this on to my daughter and that this book gets to be apart of her life. It was very good that she got to see the "through the ages" of the ponies in one of their chapters, even if it was just very little. I thank the company Abrams for publishing this book and allowing a look into the fantasy world of the pony life, especially the drawing portions and work.
