Santiago, Chile, at the height of Pinochet's reign of terror in the late twentieth century. Julieta, the Juliet of this 'Romeo and Juliet' story and the daughter of a senior government official, is to be married to the army officer of her father's choice. She attempts to escape with the boy she loves to the Peruvian Andes, but her father's tentacles reach across South America and even as far as England. The young lovers are caught up in a series of gripping adventures and narrow escapes. They are helped by a courageous priest, whose mission is to save opponents of Pinochet from the prisons, torture chambers and executions of the military régime. The Snake and the Condor is more than a retelling of one of the great love stories of world literature. It also studies the cruel effects of colonization, forced conversion and economic exploitation on non-European civilizations. It evokes the fear, suspicion and uncertainty on which tyranny and dictatorship thrive.

Utterly compelling characters, a narrative that sweeps you up and propels you through a massively rewarding - if heart breaking - story . Though with a fantastically redemptive ending. I've never been to South America, and knew nothing of this community, but feel I am know them and their country, and some of their politics and culture, but mostly I know them inside and out. If you're looking to drop into another world this summer holiday, take this one with you. It won't disappoint.

A Compelling Narrative By Raymond Greiner This is beautifully written story that transits multiple social landscapes and character descriptions and these portrayals are gripping and enthralling from start to finish. Described as a Romeo Juliet story but this story also highlights the inequities and dysfunction associated with global society and how imperfect we have developed as a collective species ignoring compassion, love and understanding for historic cultures that touched the Earth more gently and harmonized with themselves and the Earth only to be uprooted and destroyed by greed oriented political powers in a quest to control and dominate. The beauty of the two main characters Mawi and Julieta carry the reader throughout becoming attached to their profound love for each other pulling this story to a dimension seldom achieved. Emotions spill over on almost every page as the reader shares the bond of Mawi and Julieta. I am so thankful for the opportunity to read this book and it has changed and educated me in a manner only such a writing can do. I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying reading this wonderful piece of literature.

This vivid and richly intelligent novel opens up a whole world: so alive are the characters, the setting, and the gorgeous (but not heavy-handed or laborious) descriptions, the reading experience is as immersive as that of a great film. But while the scenes are cinematic and the plot compelling, the writing is also beautiful: the prose is fresh and soulful, both at once; the author's intellect shines and edifies, while never failing to entertain. I can't wait for this author's next novel.
