From the Author This book is the first in a rather involved science-fiction adventure series. I spent a good 6 months designing the back story and worlds where this series takes place. It is a rich environment near the level of Middle Earth or Heinlein's history. This novel series is a culmination of years of writing "one-shot" novels that only touched on an idea or theme. Hopefully I have written the first book in a series that will grab the reader at page one and not let go until the last page. I am currently working on the second book, and readers should see it hit Amazon in 2016.
About the Author Roger Colby is an English teacher by trade, making the lives of teens in his class difficult yet rewarding even if they cannot see the use for the important skills he is teaching them (for the most part). He is a father of four rambunctious children and is husband to a wonderful, beautiful, understanding wife who gives him space to write about weird places and even weirder happenstances. He has many dogs, cats, chickens, and birds. It is a noisy house.

He and his sidekick bodyguard Dervish are set upon by alien ‘bug’ forces from above and below this Five Rings world. As one of the few surviving Terrans Guillermo is fulsomely loathed for his species’ earlier Phaedran Empire, and frankly, he could care less. As he and Dervish set about solving a recent horrific series of crimes onworld, they also struggle to help the bug Queen save her realm.If relentless, unabashed, take-no-prisoners action is what you crave you can't go wrong with ‘The Terminarch Plot’. The action, dialogue, humor, repartee, and multiple escapes through pheromonally appalling sewers will have you reeling. Many of the novel’s SF elements come at the genre from a different, fresh angle. For example, the bugs’ communication occurs via complex layers of body language and pheromonal (olfactory) emissions. It is made to sound at once entirely plausible, and hilarious.'The Terminarch Plot' is a hybrid SF action novel with strong elements of Philip Marlowe. The strengths of both genres come through, combining visceral action with Guillermo’s distinctive ‘detective’ voice. It’s hard to imagine a better foil to his mordant banter than the very literal Dervish, tasked by the Queen to protect Guillermo unto death.My only caveat is the action rarely lets up, though the repartee and humor does bring relief. The story is narrated in the third person, unlike the detective genre. In a sense it is told over Guillermo’s shoulder, so we hear some of his internal monologue while allowing the action to unfold with an objective, cinematic smoothness.Overall this novel makes for a very entertaining foray into a different kind of SF. I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this series!
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Looking forward to book 2! By J. Meuschke Took me longer than I'd prefer due to NaNoWriMo but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Mr. Colby's imaginative world in another universe is quite immersive. As someone who doesn't normally read scifi of this type I was regularly intrigued by not only the foreign language and tech, but also the inhabitants of this world and how his human protagonist interacts with each.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A fun and interesting read By Herbert Sennett Roger is an amazing editor and writer. I thoroughly enjoyed this first in his Five Rims searies. I have to say that his writing is fun to read. By profession he's a high school teacher (and I'll bet a good one!), but is a most capable writer as well. This book is worth your time to read!
