Brice’s best friend, now a bedridden quadriplegic, incurred his devastating injury in Fallujah while on a mission he led in 2004. Miller decides that the only way to rid himself of these guilty feelings and pervasive nightmares is to leave the Marine Corps. He submits his separation request to his company commander, who is also his mentor. His commander suggests another solution …professional counseling for his psychological issues and one month of leave to clear his head. Heeding his mentor’s advice, he meets with the base counselor and commences a month of long overdue leave. He first travels to the home of his adopted parents in West Texas and then to the bedside of his best friend, Bobby Ridger, who is being cared for at his parent’s family ranch located in a small Montana town. Coincidently, Ridger was also given the name of ‘Dark Horse’ by his Arapahoe neighbors for an act of kindness he performed when he was a young boy. Thus, opens the story of how Miller, his best friend and his company commander are drawn together to begin a very unusual journey. Their journey reaches its climax when they make one last stand together in an attempt to thwart a simple terrorist plot that should never have occurred. Bungling Washington politics, crooked state officials and bad cops in a small Montana town all contribute to the successful terrorist ambush, by ninety Al Qaeda terrorists, of over three hundred sixth grade students during their year-end field trip in Yellowstone National Park. About the Author "The Last Stand of Dark Horse" is the first book in my “Brice Miller Series” and also my first book as an independent author-publisher. I was inspired to write this story after my volunteer experience serving weekly meals to wounded Marines at the Liberty Center, Balboa Hospital, San Diego from 2009-2013. Those Marines that my friends and I served meals to exemplified the Marine Corps values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Words can’t describe the upbeat and positive impressions these young men made on us. I graduated from Boston University with a degree in business administration in 1969. Shortly thereafter, I was commissioned in the United States Navy as a Supply Corps officer. My active duty stint in the Navy included a 12-month tour and 6-month extension in Vietnam. I served at the Fleet Air Support Unit, Da Nang Air Base for nine months in 1970 before I was transferred to the SEABEE staff in Saigon for nine months. Two years ago, I retired from a thirty-five year career in commercial real estate in San Diego. I currently volunteer twice a week at the USS Midway Museum in San Diego as a docent. Meeting visitors at the museum, from all over the world, and sharing stories with fellow volunteers has been a rewarding and gratifying experience. Being around other volunteers at the museum, who served in the military during Vietnam, has also provided me with an element of healing and closure on a very unpopular war. My wife and I have been happily married for thirty-seven years, and we have two adult daughters. We live in north San Diego County along with our fourth Labrador, Cody, who keeps us young at heart. As a young Marine, Brice Miller’s struggles with his inner turmoil after returning to Pendleton mimics the torment of several young Marines who I have personally met after they have returned to Balboa Hospital for treatment for PTSD and/or traumatic brain injury. The price that Brice Miller had to pay from participating in far too many repeated deployments to the Middle East is very, very real, and confronts many of our young servicemen and women as they return from Iraq and Afghanistan.This story is riveting; I couldn’t put it down. The harrowing story that so many children and civilians faced outside Yellowstone Park is vividly portrayed and weaved into a very believable story; God willing, I hope that we will not to have to face this type of threat by Al Qaeda operatives that is so realistically reflected in this novel.Outstanding read; one of the best books I have read in a long, long time…

A Page Turner That Describes a Potential Scenario Related to Terrorism By Charles St Laurent The author takes great detail to introduce you to the characters early in the first few chapters so one can understand their follow on actions that are believable. The story starts slow but once into the main story it becomes a page turner eagerly looking for the next series of action. Tying in the concept of terrorism involving young children seems real and gives one thought about those seeking to destroy the USA. The characters seem real from the evil ones to the heroes. highly recommend this book for both those w/ military background and to those concerned civilians.
