Chapter 1: Start with a useful subject

"A good subject is full of spoilers. The better the subject, the less new information the recipient will find in the email. Your job when writing the subject is to spoil the entire email as concisely as possible, so make it clear, concise, and specific. This really matters because the subject is the thing that will be displayed in every email app. Your first goal when sending an email is to convince the recipient to open it, and the subject is your best chance to convince them. Sometimes, they'll see the first line or two of the email body in a preview, but they'll definitely see the subject, so make it count!"

Chapter 2: Addressing your email

"When you reply-all, imagine you are walking into each recipient's office and saying whatever you write in the email. If the original email was sent by a Division President to the entire division, and your reply is "I'm available on the 25th", then imagine going to every desk in the division - starting with the Division President - and blurting out, "I'm available on the 25th!" Does Janice in Accounting need to know you're available on the 25th? What about Bill in Sales? And Tom in the mailroom? No. They do not need to know you're available on the 25th."

About the Author Josh Doody dual-majored in Computer and Electrical Engineering, and later earned his MBA at the University of Florida. He began his professional career as an electrical engineer, and then transitioned to project management and consulting in the talent management software industry. He has worked in many areas of the talent management industry including project management, consulting, implementation, technical support, and product development. He has consulted with firms large and small on their compensation management and planning strategies and helped to implement software to help them manage their workforces more effectively. Josh has also been a hiring manager, helping to build a 25-person technical support team based at the headquarters of an international software company, and has managed a team of technical consultants.

By Christopher Hawkins This book helped me to de-emotionalize some of the more difficult e-mail exchanges that come up in my business, and in doing so let me communicate more clearly and concisely. Even stressful situations like firing a client or turning down work were made much, much easier thanks to the book.Plus, the craziest thing happened - once I leveled-up my own e-mail communication skills, the replies sent by my clients and vendors seemed to rise to meet the new bar I had set! So, learning from Mastering Business Email not only improved the quality of e-mail communications I send, it's improved the quality of the e-mail replies I receive. I didn't see that coming but it's great!

By Holger I'm not a native speaker, so I sometimes struggle to communicate exactly what I want to say. Josh has a great chapter on organizing the email so the most important points are obvious to anyone who skims the email. This helps me emphasize the important information in my emails so I know I have communicated exactly what I want to say. If you sometimes believe that you could optimize your emails or your wording I can highly recommend giving this book a shot.

By Corey M I normally consider myself good at communication, but this book was eye opening. There are so many things we just don't consider until someone explains them to you at a higher level. Mastering Business Email does just that.
