Short, and yet quite interesting By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson In the Purloined Letters, the Prefect of the Parisian police comes to Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin with a problem to which he has no solution. An unscrupulous governmental minister has stolen an embarrassing letter from a member of the royal family, and is using it for blackmail. The Prefect has made every effort to retrieve the letter, but cannot find it. Now it appears that only the mind of Monsieur Dupin can deduce where the letter is hidden.First published in 1841, this story marks the introduction of the mystery and the private investigator. I found this story to be short, and yet quite interesting. It is interesting for its historical value and just for its own sake.

Excellent as a Student Text for Analysis and Critical Thinking By Ida Lizabeth "The Purloined Letter" is a story about an incriminating letter stolen in full view of the owner. The Chief of Paris Police seeks assistance from the detective, C. Auguste Dupin. Dupin outwits the thief before the Chief of Police does, and then goes to great lengths to explain the differences in their reasoning abilities. The story appears here in its unabridged form, in an easy-to-read print format. Activities to assist understanding are included at the beginning and end of the story. They include vocabulary study, factual and critical thinking questions, discussion and writing activities, and a student answer key. The activities encourage in-depth analysis and target a wide range of language arts skills.
