When Delia chose to major in archaeology, she imagined herself as the female Indiana Jones of the Southwest. She didn't imagine herself crawling through abandoned mine shafts, scrounging for rusty pickaxes and gold pans to sell on auction sites, but Indiana Jones didn't have to make student loan payments.

Scouring the mountains of Arizona with Simon, her best friend and computer geek extraordinaire, Delia dreams of turning their scavenging enterprise into a legitimate business. More, she longs to earn the respect of peers who shun her for turning into a treasure hunter. What she doesn't dream of is stumbling across a decapitated body in an old mine near Prescott.

Something dangerous has come to the mountains, and two Harley-riding strangers are the only ones who seem to have a clue. They speak a language Delia has never heard and carry mysterious artifacts she's never seen. Investigating these strangers might lead her to discoveries that change the face of archaeology forever.... Or it might lead her and her best friend into a deadly monster's lair.

A Disappointment By Reader Girl I've read several other books by Buroker, and I really enjoyed them, so I was very disappointed in this start to a new series. Below, I break my review into separate sections on characters and plot.Characters:The characterization is thin and doesn't ring true - the characters feel contrived, like the author was trying too hard to make them witty and fun. Temi is particularly undeveloped. Most of the time, she exists as a foil for Del and Simon, or as someone convenient to drive the others around and speak dialogue or take action whenever it's needed. For long stretches, she has nothing to say or do, making it easy to forget she's present. Clearly she should have been a main character, but she was not well integrated into the story, so came across as more of an afterthought than a main character. It seemed as if Buroker might have added her in during a revision of the book.Delia bugs me. She uses her friends who have access to technical stuff or specialized knowledge, but she doesn't do much to deserve their help. I'm not really sure what she contributes to the story beyond narrating it.Simon is okay, but his geekiness is overdone. Not much of a sense of his ethnic identity comes through either, even though it is supposed to be particularly important to him. The characters in general all are supposed to have very distinctive ethnic identities, but as written, they are very generic characters.Plot:Overall, the plot is uneven in its development. The first half of the book is very slow, and the characters are not put in much jeopardy during this section (not so for others off stage). Too much time setting up without much payoff. The second half of the book, on the other hand, reads like a real potboiler. It's full of action but not very believable action, unfortunately. The characters' actions to get out of situations are improbable and frequently not very well described. Sometimes their reactions do not seem in keeping with the situation they're facing. As a whole, this section of the plot was implausible, and I found myself rolling my eyes several times. To sum up:I find it hard to believe the same person who wrote the Emperor's Edge series also wrote this.

Great start to a new series By Beesocks I stumbled onto Lindsay Buroker through some free ebooks a few years ago and she has rapidly become one of my favorite authors, I really look forward to any of her new releases. I purchased this one last night as soon as I saw that it was available and was finished a few hours later, and now I'm stuck again, waiting for another one to come out, its a vicious cycle :PI'm terrible at writing reviews, but I quite liked the book, so here goes-this book has lots of action and adventure. Del and her business partner Simon are 20-somethings: snarky, geeky, smart, and funny. While looking for archeological treasure in an abandoned mine shaft they find themselves in the middle of monsters, aliens, murder, and mayhem. Unlike Amaranthe from the Emperor's Edge books, I think Del would rather just get out of town and avoid the whole rampaging scary monster scene altogether, and is sort of dragged a bit reluctantly into adventure. She and Simon are joined by Temi, her childhood BFF, who is looking for a job and gets more than she bargained for. Lots of running around, chasing, fighting in caves and tunnels, run-ins with the monster and the mysterious biker dudes, mixed in with sitting around the laptop trying to find a decent wifi signal. Like Indiana Jones, with less archaeology, Del even has a bullwhip. For me Del and Simon made the book, I loved their snarky (but not annoyingly so) arguments and back and forth moments. They don't have magic powers or super warrior skills, but they're smart and think on their feet when trouble comes around. (they do tend to leap headfirst into trouble)This is not a romance (if that's what you are looking for) but there are hints that maybe in the future there might be, its very much an action adventure, with humor and paranormal/fantasy aspects. The characters seem like real people, not forced or unnatural, like people you'd want to hang out with. There are quite a few loose ends once the dust settles. Its not a cliffhanger by any means, there is an ending, but it definitely leaves room for more to come.as always, very well-written, with no grammar or spelling errors (that I noticed) to take the reader out of the story. Excellent beginning to a new series By Amazon Customer Delia and Simon are out looking for relics they can sell when they run across a dead body and outrun something that is chasing them out of the cave and tunnel system they were in. The book starts out with fast action and it just keeps on going. If you've read the Emperor's Edge series, this is not Amaranth. Lindsay has done a great job in creating a new set of hero's and heroines and given them a very different feel. I loved the book and now am in my familiar rut of wanting the NEXT book in the series to be published tomorrow afternoon.****Spoilers*****There are some real twists in the book. The heroine's role isn't what I thought it would be. There is some decent setup for the rest of the series and a slew of unanswered questions. Delia is way more reluctant than I thought she would be, but then so far she doesn't really have much of a role. I'm assuming she will become more defined in the next volume. I'm definitely holding out hope for the Athenian warrior.*****End Spoilers*******It's a great book, if you like fast paced, clean, well written stories, you won't go wrong with this one.
